Whitman County Library summer reading participants logged more than 5,280 hours of reading to complete the programs. “One World, Many Stories” was the theme. Participants who finished received goody bags filled with prizes and coupons along with a completion certificate. During the “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed” enforcement campaign conducted Aug. 19-Sept. 5 in Whitman County, officers on routine and extra patrols arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI). Statewide, officers arrested 1,824 drivers for DUI. Washington State University Police Department, Whitman County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol participated in the extra DUI patrols. Palouse Area Robotics Team will hold an organizing meeting for all area students and residents interested in forming a multi-school team. Colfax City Council Monday night again opened the rural residential zone along the North Fork of the Palouse River to hunting this year. Hunters will be required to obtain permission from property owners. City law prohibits hunting inside the city limits, but the year-to-year resolution takes the rural residential zone, property which was annexed into the city, out of the banned area. Lucile Brindle Wayman A memorial service for Lucile Brindle Wayman, 95, a member of the 1934 class of Colfax High School who resided in Pullman for most of her adult life, was Monday, Sept. 19, at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman. Mrs. Wayman died last Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at Whitman Senior Living in Pullman. Born Feb. 19, 1916, in Washtucna, to Marley and Eda Mays Brindle, she moved with her parents to a farm five miles north of Colfax in 1919. Civil War group to mark library’s Lincoln exhibit As part of the library’s month-long exhibit celebrating the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, members of the Washington State Civil War Association will give a presentation Sunday at the library. Amy Warwick of Oakesdale will open the sixth season of the Meet the Artist series Oct. 6 to talk about her first novel, “Summer Snow,” published in 2009.
