  • Fate of old Palouse city shed uncertain

    Garth Meyer|Sep 22, 2011

The fate of an old Public Works storage shed is being discussed in Palouse. The wooden building on Main Street, which lies on a flood plain, is still much in use. Several city departments claim space in the shed. Inside the dark brown, sun-faded wood is a back hoe, dump truck, street sweeper and a city service truck, among other things. “It’s used, it’s used a lot,” said Mayor Michael Echanove. “It’s very, very tight (in there),” said Mike Milano, city councilman and finance chairman. • Spot on

    Sep 22, 2011

Recently my husband, Rick, wrote about how much First Wind did not want Roger Whitten to present his case in court. The letter was prophetic. Lo and behold, we read in last week’s Gazette that Mr. Whitten is “planning to drop his appeal and move to rural Spokane County” and that the County Prosecutor says “the move to continue the hearing was made so both sides could finalize an out-of-court settlement.” hmmmm...I guess Rick’s letter stating “could his (Whitten’s) arguments be legitimate” and “they don’t want them to see the light of day” mus...

  • Vital services

    Sep 22, 2011

With all the complaints about taxes and government I wanted to send a note about how much I appreciate our local government services providers. My big thanks goes to our county road crews. I know it takes hard work to keep the roads in the Palouse open and in good shape. I appreciate the county crews who respond quickly and effectively to any problems. I also appreciate the teachers in our area who provide a quality education for our children. My kids are all out of school, but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy to support the teachers tra...

  • W. Bruce Cameron - "A Car Is More than the Sum of Its Parts, Right? "

    Sep 22, 2011

I own an automobile built by one of the better N.D. (Now Defunct) car companies. I’m worried that parts will become harder and harder to come by, so I take my faithful car into my mechanic, Melvin Walletdrainer. “I want you to give it a complete checkup,” I tell him. “I’m hoping to get at least another 50,000 miles out of it.” “Man, are you funny,” Melvin replies. He has hair, fingernails and shirt stains that are all the same shade of black. “You could do Vegas, you’re funnier than that guy, what’s his name, been there forever.” “Don Rickle... Full story

  • Don Brunell - "When Alaska prospers, the Puget Sound prospers"

    Sep 22, 2011

The 1896 Yukon gold rush triggered a boom for Seattle as prospectors flocked to ships bound for Alaska. In 1968, ARCO found black gold - oil - on the state’s North Slope around Prudhoe Bay, triggering a boom for Tacoma’s port where equipment was loaded onto ships and barges bound for our 49th state. Today, Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell (R) is launching a campaign to bring more business to his state. Parnell, who served as Sarah Palin's lieutenant governor, has been traveling the country telling people that Alaska is open for business. He says his...

  • Adele Ferguson - "No one really knows why people need sleep"

    Sep 22, 2011

THERE’S BEEN another one of those sleep studies warning us once again that millions of Americans are sleep-deprived, thus making us vulnerable to heart attacks and strokes, dumbed down students and drowsy drivers. The latest is according to a study presented at the American Academy of Sleep’s annual meeting in June in Minneapolis and reported in USA Today last month. It shouldn’t surprise you to be told that men tend to be night owls, wanting to go to bed later and get up later, while women are more often morning people. I happen to be a morni... Full story

  • Pet Peeves: Correcting a bogus number

    Sep 22, 2011

A note came into the Gazette that complained about the Pet Peeves in the paper. The complaint said that the paper should not allow such negative thoughts to be printed and that they are harmful. Pet Peeves, the letter said, should be eliminated, but it would be okay to continue with Okeydokes because they are positive. Actually, some of the “negative” pet peeves have had a positive effect. As such, both the positive and negative are acceptable. That is the point. Even so, not all make it to the page. Some are eliminated because they are sim... Full story

Whitman County commissioners Monday gave Public Works Director Mark Storey the go-ahead to begin negotiations to purchase land for a new landfill cell at the county’s Carothers Road transfer station. Storey last week presented commissioners with an engineering study prepared by CH2M Hill that showed construction of a new landfill cell would be the best option for the future of Whitman County’s waste. Storey said, if the county proceeds with building a new landfill cell, it would likely happen in 2016. CH2M Hill’s study said construction of the... Full story

Willson, who finished minutes ahead of the pack, turned around at the original site of the stake which had actually been pulled. She was unaware that the turn site on the Colfax trail had been moved a few yards down the trail because the starting line had been...

  • Colfax shakes off mistakes for big win at Gorillaville

    Sep 22, 2011

It was a case of the first half and the second half Friday night when Colfax pegged a 38-18 win over Davenport for their first league win of the season. The Bulldogs gave up four turnovers in the first half and Davenport pegged a 10-6 lead at the break. Levi Hardy rolled up 130 yards on the ground at Davenport Friday. Many of those gains started on blocks like Daython Maltone's displacement of a Gorilla defender in this photo by Keith Miller. During an extended halftime when Davenport officials dedicated new facilities, Colfax coaches told the...

  • County spending lags behind budget projection

    Joe Smillie, Gazette Reporter|Sep 22, 2011

Spending by the various departments in Whitman County’s $12.7 million current expense operating fund has been held under year-to-date projections. Administrative Director Gary Petrovich reported Monday the county agencies have spent just shy of $7.3 million through August, about 58 percent of the yearly budget. That total lags behind the $8.5 million total expected to have been spent two-thirds through the year. More than 70 percent of the expenses, $5.1 million, was for salaries and benefits for county employees. Spending may increase, t...
