Vital services

With all the complaints about taxes and government I wanted to send a note about how much I appreciate our local government services providers. My big thanks goes to our county road crews. I know it takes hard work to keep the roads in the Palouse open and in good shape. I appreciate the county crews who respond quickly and effectively to any problems.

I also appreciate the teachers in our area who provide a quality education for our children. My kids are all out of school, but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy to support the teachers training the next generation.

Sometimes it’s hard to remember that some of the things that make our society work are paid for with our taxes. Schools, roads, libraries, police and parks are all paid for with taxes. I don’t agree with politicians who vote to keep their pay increases while trying to balance the budget by cutting the pay of those who actually provide services to the citizens.

Since I’m not running for office I can say maybe we need to raise taxes so we can keep these vital services. Road crews, teachers, librarians and police make up a healthy part of the county budget. How about giving them meaningful contracts with decent pay? Maybe administrators who think it’s a major accomplishment to figure out how much money the county has could take a cut to help out those doing the work.
