Lucile Brindle Wayman

A memorial service for Lucile Brindle Wayman, 95, a member of the 1934 class of Colfax High School who resided in Pullman for most of her adult life, was Monday, Sept. 19, at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman. Mrs. Wayman died last Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at Whitman Senior Living in Pullman.

Born Feb. 19, 1916, in Washtucna, to Marley and Eda Mays Brindle, she moved with her parents to a farm five miles north of Colfax in 1919. She attended the Hubbard School through the eighth grade and then Colfax High School. She attended business school in Spokane, worked a short time for a law firm, and married Chester Wayman, who was from the Ewarstville area, Nov. 5, 1939.

She began a 35-year career as a bookkeeper at Brown & Holter in Pullman. In 1976 she became bookkeeper for Simpson United Methodist Church. They began farming in the Ewarstville area in 1955, and she was very active in the farm operation. She was also active in the church and enjoyed reading, especially Louis L’Amour books. Mr. Wayman died March 21, 1993.

Surviving are a brother, Roger (Peggy) Brindle of Kalama. Etta Wegner of Pullman is a sister-in-law.

The family suggests memorial gifts go to Simpson Methodist Church.

Ralph Ownbey

A memorial service for Ralph Roland Ownbey, 90, long-time resident of Potlatch, was at Freeze Church in Potlatch Tuesday morning. Mr. Ownbey died at Gritman Memorial Hospital in Moscow Sept. 16, 2011.

Born in Buhl, Idaho, Jan. 26, 1921, he served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II as an engine room technician on the destroyer Wells. During his service he lost his hearing when a shipboard cannon was fired over his head.

He married Phyllis Rohn Feb. 14, 1947, at her parent’s farm in Potlatch. They farmed near Buhl until 1955 when they moved to Potlatch. He worked at the Potlatch lumber mill until it closed in 1980.

He was very active in his retirement years with motorcycling, snow skiing, golfing, square dancing, taking care of his property including his Christmas trees and enjoying his grandchildren.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Phyllis, three sons, Randy (Carol), Duane (Eleanor), and David (Patty), and five grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial contributions go to Freeze Cemetery in care of Julie Hoidal at 1150 Deep Creek Rd., Potlatch, 83855.
