Civil War group to mark library’s Lincoln exhibit
As part of the library’s month-long exhibit celebrating the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, members of the Washington State Civil War Association will give a presentation Sunday at the library.
Amy Williams of Endicott, a member of the association, said re-enactors will be in both Union and Confederate uniforms to discuss life during the Civil War. Among topics will be hardships faced during the war. On hand will be weapons, maps, books and other gear used both by soldiers and civilians who lived in the path of the war.
The Civil War presentation will be in the basement meeting room of the Colfax Library beginning at 2 p.m.
Rosalia fall festival
Rosalia’s fall festival has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8-3. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. Live entertainment, hay rides from 10 until 3, and store specials are planned.

Duo to play at Bank Left
The fourth annual dinner and concert at the historical second floor of The Bank Left gallery in Palouse Saturday, Sept. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature music by Mandolin and guitar players Mike Haberman and James Hoar from Lewiston. Cornish game hen with an apricot glaze will be on the menu.

ART
The WSU museum of Art will present a career overview of Jim Olson, one of the northwest’s leading architects, Sept. 30 to Dec. 10 .; A graduate of the University of Washinigton School of Architecture, Olson established his own firm in Seattle in 1966. The office is now known as Olson Kundig Architects.
The exhibit features drawings, models, plans, photographs and a specially built “ideal room.” Reception Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. at the gallery with lecture in CUB auditorium at 7 p.m.
WSU Fine Arts Faculty exhibition at the museum concludes Sept. 24. Gallery hours 10 to 4 Monday through Saturday with 7 p.m. closing on Thursdays.
MUSIC
WSU Wind Symphony Orchestra kicks off the 2011-12 season at 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 22, in Bryan Hall Theater. The performance will be directed by new orchestra conductor Matt Aubin Hovhaness was the Seattle Symphony’s composer in residence for more than 30 years.
A WSU Faculty Artist Series concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in Bryan Hall Theater. WSU Associate Professor Julie Anne Wieck, soprano, and Professor Gerald Berthiaume, piano and harpsichord, will open the program with baroque art songs by British composer Henry Purcell.

Carter daughter born
Zakiah Mae Carter was born Sept. 10, 2011, at Pullman Regional Hospital to Dustin and Liz Carter of Pullman. Maternal grandparents are Tom and Cheryl Kammerzell and Tim and Barb Schlunegar of Colfax. Paternal grandparent is LaVonne Carter of Brooten, Minn. Great-grandparents are Elsie Plackner of Grand Rapids, Minn .; Gene and Margaret Hilty of Platteville, Colo .; Donald Kammerzell of Colfax, and Dianne Utgaard Bond of Clarkston. This is the couple’s first child.
Dales welcome son
Zane Joseph Dale was born Aug. 12, 2011, at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Hospital in Oak Harbor at six pounds, five 1/2 ounces, to Petty Officer Cody Dale and Stephanie Ruzanka-Dale. Maternal grandparents are Andy Stuen and Joanna Ruzanka-Stuen & the late Steve Ruzanka, of Gig Harbor. Paternal grandparents are Mike Dale and Theresa Fitzgerald-Dale of the St. John/Thornton area. Great-grandparents include Ed Dale of Rosalia, Patrick Fitzgerald of San Antonio, Texas, and Mary Kiedrowski of Bridgeport. Great-great-grandmother is Edna Schenzel of Waterville. Special great-grandparents include Frank Irvin of Brewster and Donna McPherson of Colville. This is the couple’s first child.
Damery son born
Logan Michael was born Sept. 14, 2011, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center at nine pounds, 15 ounces to Tessa and John Damery. Maternal grandparents are Tom and Szann Cuccia, La. Paternal grandparents are Mike Damery of Colfax and Karen Stall of Moses Lake. The baby joins siblings Giovanni and Angelina.

Forever Free events continue at the Colfax Library with a discussion of the book “The Badge of Courage” Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. and the final Underground Railroad Quilting Class Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.

To schedule a field trip or presentation, contact Sheri Miller at the library.Twenty-five youngsters attended the after school science session at the St. John Library Sept 14. Cheryl Currin from Girl Scouts was there to show the kids how to make slime.
The Schwan man came by with popsicles for everyone. Next month’ s guest scientist plans to teach structural engineering with marshmallows and spaghetti.Visit the library for great deals in Troll’s Corner Book Sale. Many items are available including used books, Friends’ cookbooks and reusable book bags.
As always, the library welcomes donations of good quality books, paperback, music and movies. Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s programs throughout Whitman County.September is the American Library Association’s Library Card Sign Up Month. Everyone signing up for a Whitman County Library card is entered into a drawing for one of two certificates from the Friends of the Library to be used at a local business of their choice.
