  • State crews at work on ditch

    State highway crews Monday resumed work on clearing the Highway 272 drainage ditch that runs along the north side of the highway down the grade into Colfax. The crew is clearing rock from along the channel. Flaggers are posted on the grade to conduct one-way traffic in the south side lane while equipment, including a shovel, works on the north side lane of the highway. The rocks are being placed in wire-wrapped gabion blocks which will be placed along the channel as an erosion control measure....

    Lura Potter of Colfax, Tuesday won the first two rounds of the NE tennis playoffs to advance to the final match which will be against Rosie Melville of Lind/Ritzville/Sprague. Potter defeated Janae Dasef of Wilbur/Creston 6-0 6-1 and Lauren Senske of St. George’s 6-4 1-6 and 6-3 in the semi-finals. Potter plays with the Odessa/Harrington team.... Full story

  • Colfax softball team drops Scotties twice

    Colfax softball team, top finisher in the NE league race, was on the sidelines Tuesday when six other teams in the NE waged the first rounds of the district playoffs, the first step of the state eliminations. Northwest Christian, the number-two NE finisher, was also on the sidelines. Both league leaders will get into the final rounds next Tuesday at the Merkel softball fields in North Spokane.     All seven Colfax golfers made the first half cut Monday at Deer Park in the NE sub-district round to advance to the district round next Tuesday at Colville. The top 11 finishers for boys and girls at Colville will go on to the state finals. The Bulldogs Monday were led by Hunter Weitze who won the medalist honors with a 73 score on the par 72 Deer Park course to top 56 entrants.     Colfax sustained its first loss of the season Monday when they collided with DeSales in the first round of state baseball playoffs at Medical Lake. The Bulldogs bounded back to defeat Wilbur/Creston and place third in the all-day seeding round. Colfax will play next at Central Valley May 23 in the 16 team round of the playoffs. Four teams will be at CV, and the winner of both rounds will advance to the the state final four.     The Colton High School softball team will start the District 7/9 tournament Saturday at Medical Lake High School. The Wildcats – defending their sixth consecutive state 1B championship – enter the postseason more vulnerable than they have looked in that long.     The Garfield-Palouse baseball season ended Saturday with a 12-8 record (5-5 league). Playing at home for doubleheader sweep of Touchet, the Vikings nonetheless will play no more, without getting the help elsewhere they would have needed to make the playoffs. In the opening game against Touchet, Gar-Pal delivered a seven-run rally to take the lead on a base hit from senior Gabe Cocking. The final score was 12-11.     Colton met Almira-Coulee-Hartline – a playoff opponent for the sixth consecutive year – Tuesday night to open the 2015 postseason.     Colfax girls Tuesday rolled up their seventh straight NE district track title at the Ritzville track. The Bulldogs rolled out 109 points to edge the LRS Broncos with eight points to spare. LRS had pegged wins over Colfax in earlier league rounds, but Colfax nudged them last week in a meet here. Both teams were a full force Tuesday for the NE collision for the NE meet.     A July 20 trial date was set for Ruddy Aladina, 24, WSU student accused of second-degree rape. Aladina appeared in Whitman County Superior Court Friday one week after failing to appear. Judge David Frazier told Aladina that he could have issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear the previous week, but instead Aladina was slated to appear Friday and show cause why he didn't appear.     Palouse Police Department has a new full-time officer. Joseph Handley, 25, started Monday, May 4, arriving in Palouse from Sedro-Woolley where he worked for the Upper Skagit Police Department. A North Kitsap High School graduate and veteran, Handley was hired by Upper Skagit after serving in the Army with duty in Iraq.     The Colfax school board had a preliminary discussion Monday night at its regular meeting about potential changes to graduation requirements.     Farmington’s city council April 20 approved two levy proposals for the Aug. 4 primary election. Proposition one would levy a special tax to generate $12,000 for street maintenance. The estimated levy rate will be $1.08 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. Proposition two will ask voters whether the town of Farmington should levy a special tax of $8,000 on an estimated 72 cents per $1,000 for the current expense fund.     The Whitman County Public Works Department has received a Certificate of Good Practice from the State Treasurer for 2014.     The city of Palouse is in the midst of an update to the Shoreline Management Plan for the North Fork of the Palouse River.
