Domestic violence touches every person in our community and society as a whole and violates a person’s dignity, safety and basic human rights. Estimates range to up to 3 million women who are physically abused by their husbands or boyfriends every year. On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country e...

In the Christian Life we serve the Lord by learning to bear our own burdens and the burdens of others. The process for burden bearing is explained in Galatians chapter six. This article focuses upon the believer bearing another believer’s spiritual burdens. 6:1 “Brethern, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.” Note that whom the apostle Paul addresses “Brethren,” are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Nov 13, 2013

The effort to build a skate park in Palouse may have a new location option. Organizer Aaron Flansburg was set to present signatures regarding how people feel about four proposed sites at Tuesday night’s city council meeting. Among the four was a new location put forth by Flansburg’s group: the former trailer park site next to the car wash at the east entrance of town. The new option is offered after two locations in Hayton Greene Park had received gaining opposition over the fall. The new hal...

As I wrote a few weeks ago, I’m having a lot of pain in my rear end, and not just because I’ve got three kids. It’s because my back hates me. I guess I can’t blame it: Picture how you’d feel if you knew someone who kept steering you over to the couch and sitting on you. Backbones are constructed in a way that resembles what would happen if you went to the cafeteria at a retirement home, grabbed several plates of lime Jell-O and stacked them on top of each other. The plates are your vertebrae, and the jiggling squares of Jell-O are your disc...

Three cheers Have you noticed the big banner hanging across the front of Whitman Community Hospital? It is there because of a very special earned honor, and now I know why. During this year I have spent time with close relatives in two “local” eastside hospitals, and in one shiny, new westside hospital. I was shocked at the lack of services or care for their patients. In four days at each of these hospitals my patient relatives received no bathing opportunities, no clean linens on the bed, or even straightening of the linens while the patient w...

The good news is, America is bringing its troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. However, that presents a challenge because a large number of those troops will leave the military upon their return. That shift, along with significant cuts in military spending, means tens of thousands of veterans will be looking for work. Unfortunately, those veterans have a higher rate of unemployment than the general population — 10.1 percent, compared to 7.2 percent for the general population. Many of these brave citizens who put their lives on the line for u...

Henry Waxman made a plea at the end of a House hearing grilling Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The California Democrat asked Republicans to reach across the aisle to work with Democrats to improve Obamacare. Yes, Henry Waxman, who has made a career of ideological witch hunts and smash-mouth partisanship, wants a cease-fire over Obamacare, or so he says. He was picking up a common liberal theme: It's not fair that Republicans continue to oppose the president's eponymous health-care law and pick at its failures, deceits...

This week Macy’s, Target, J.C. Penney, Sears, Best Buy and other retailers annnounced plans to open earlier on Thanksgiving Day. Last year was the first time in history that mainline stores opened on the holiday. With all of these chains competing with each other, if one is open the others have to be too. Or do they? There seems to be some missed opportunity in all of this. What if one big store just stayed closed? The sheer public relations benefit in being the high-profile store that says “no” would be worth it, likely in spades. They...

  • St. John-Endicott football finishes season 3-7
