    8 years ago, August 22, 1884 Early Tuesday morning our little city was thrown into a state of excitement by the report that Louis A. Knott, the murderer of Wm. T. Higgins, had been hanged by a mob. About 1 o’clock a man rapped at the door of Sheriff Marsh’s house, adjoining the county jail in this city.     Letha Ellen Merry A memorial service for Letha Ellen Merry, 92, will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Palouse Federated Church on Bridge Street in Palouse. Mrs. Merry died Aug. 3, 2009, in Pullman. She has been cremated. Born Sept. 2, 1916, near Palouse to Charles and Marry Mingus, she was raised in the Palouse area and graduated from Palouse High School as valedictorian of the class of 1936.     Lamont Three weeks ago, Pete Swannack was injured when a gear assembly he was working on let go. When it did, it hit a ladder that Pete was standing on. Pete was knocked to the ground and sustained a hole in his lung and three broken ribs. When his wife, Sandy, who is an EMT, saw what had happened, she took him to Sprague and the ambulance drove him to a hospital in Spokane. At this writing, Pete is getting better every day.     Evelyn Morgan and Wanda Sheahan were given a special treat at the fifth annual motorcycle rally at Rosalia last weekend. They hopped on the back of Honda Gold Wing motorcycles and cruised downtown Rosalia with members of the Northwest Wings Drill Team.     A $50,000 bond for pre-trial release was set for Eric N. Gearhart, Palouse resident who faces four charges in superior court. Gearhart is charged with attacking Palouse Officer Joe Merry when the officer went to Gearhart’s residence in Palouse Aug. 9 in response to a domestic violence call.     In a lonely stand of pine trees beside a wheat field west of Tekoa, lie the graves of a people from a time long ago. No sign marks this cemetery, but some of the tombstones have been cleared and scrubbed clean. Many are now readable.
