    A four-month-old child died April 5. He rolled off his bed and suffocated on a plastic bag. The father was sentenced Friday to 27 months for second degree manslaughter. The apartment where the child, his parents and two other siblings lived was reportedly in total disarray, filthy and loaded with dangers for the children. The mother was not charged with any culpability in the child's death, but the children have been taken away from her. It is a sad case and an unnecessary death.     Northwest Christian last Thursday hammered the Tekoa/Rosalia teams in a north-south NE round at Colbert. The Crusader boys pegged a 71-27 win with a 38-12 lead at the half. Cooper Angelo again topped TR with 13 points, and Chase Neill hit four. Again cranking out a defense which produced 19 steals, the Colfax girls Tuesday rolled past the LRS Broncos with a 47-31 win to advance their NE league record 10-2.     Colfax and GP wrestlers, who will compete this Saturday at Pomeroy, rolled up 70 points last Saturday to place seventh in the Coyote Classic tournament at Kittitas. The host Coyotes dominated their own show to take the title with a team score of 151.5 points. Liberty, which was nudged by Colfax and Garfield/Palouse last week when the locals took the tourney title at Northwest Christian, placed second Saturday at Kittitas with 102 points.     A landfill cell at the Whitman County Solid Waste Transfer Site is nearing full capacity, with plans to seal it in the next two years. The 2.9-acre cell No. 4 is used for demolition debris, asphalt, wood and concrete. “It's 95 percent full now,” said Whitman County Public Works Director Mark Storey.     The ownership of the Shopko building in Pullman has changed hands, but the ownership transfer does not effect the store. The retail store was listed with the county real estate department for $6,733,333 on Dec. 2, 2015. The transfer listed Spirit Portfolio 2006 of Scottsdale, Ariz., as the previous owner and Elizabeth Trainer LLC of Portland as the new owner.     A couple of weeks ago, the Port of Whitman County received a surprise: a long overdue letter. “We were kind of shocked when we got the letter,” said Port Properties and Development Manager Debbie Snell.     The St. John School District is one of several districts across the county with levy proposals on the ballot for Feb. 9, which has now been mailed out to voters.     County Elections Office staffers Monday began a telephone survey of voters in the Oakesdale School District to ascertain whether or not they received the correct ballot for the Oakesdale School District levy proposition.
