Colfax girls run five straight wins

Carmen Gfeller of Colfax heads for the hoop against Tessa Jantz of the Broncos in Tuesday's big win at Colfax.

Again cranking out a defense which produced 19 steals, the Colfax girls Tuesday rolled past the LRS Broncos with a 47-31 win to advance their NE league record 10-2. It was the fifth straight win for the Bulldogs who cruised to big wins Friday at Reardan and last Wednesday at Liberty.

The Bulldogs, who moved to a tie with St. George's for the top spot in the south side standings, now have two more league rounds left with a trip to Rosalia to play the Timberwolves Saturday and a home finale against St. George's Tuesday.

Tuesday night, Colfax posted a six-point lead over the Broncos in the first half. They actually posted a 10-point lead in the middle of the second quarter, but a Broncos' charge closed it to six points at the break.

Colfax then came out and roared in the third quarter with a run on nine points. The Broncos could not get their offense in gear with Katelyn Scholz and Kylie Gronning again leading the middle court attack.

Colfax bumped the lead past 20 points, 41-20, with 5:38 left in the game, and they finished at 47-31.

The Broncos were held to just 12 points in the second half.

Carmen Gfeller, who is now playing with all the wraps off of her injured hand, posted a strong first half and finished with 17 points. Ashtyn Aune and Scout Cai each finished with eight.

The Bulldogs went into the game Tuesday with junior starter Taylor Garcia on the sidelines to recover from an eye bruise.

Friday at Reardan, the Bulldogs rolled out a 49-35 game against the Indians, who have just one win in the NE to date. Colfax posted a 29-14 lead at the half and played deep into the lineup on the way to the big win.

Gfeller also hit 15 to top Colfax in the Friday game, and Olivia Mellor hit eight.

Last Wednesday at Liberty, the Bulldogs cruised to a 67-48 win over the Lancers with Gfeller hitting 20 for her best night after returning to the action. The Bulldogs cooked a 35-23 lead at the half and kept charging for the big win over the Lancers, who are now 6-6 in the south side for fourth place and figure to make the cut for the first round of the NE playoffs at the end of the league race.

Christine Denny led Liberty with 15, and Maggie Nelson hit 12.
