    Cylen A. Moses, Lewiston, was unhurt early Sunday when he lost control of a 2010 Dodge van while driving in the S curves area south of Colfax. According to the Washington State Patrol report, Moses was driving southbound at 2 a.m. and lost control on the icy highway.     A group of WSU design students Saturday visited Firemen’s Park at the intersection of S. Main and Highway 195 for a proposed class project. The students are studying possible installation of a city sign at the park to direct traffic to Whitman Hospital and other locations, according to Mayor Todd Vanek. The students met with Hospital Administrator Hank Hanigan, and they also checked out the small park. Bob Krikac, chairman of the Colfax Historic Preservation committee, accompanied the students.   • Prison term on meth plea

    A warrant of commitment of Jason Day, 39, Spokane, to the state prison system was filed Jan. 17 in superior court. Day was credited for 117 days spent in jail here since he was arrested in Tekoa. Judge Gary Libey Jan. 13 sentenced Day to a year and a day in prison after Day pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine. He was arrested Sept. 23 in Tekoa after a deputy observed a pickup truck pulling a trailer which had a faulty taillight.     Steven G. Scott, 23, Pullman, was cited for driving too fast for conditions, following a three-car accident on Highway 195 two miles north of Spangle at 5:57 p.m. Thursday. A Spangle resident, Gary Whitcomb, 69, was injured in the accident and taken by a private vehicle to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane.   • Library starts ‘food for fines’

    The 17th annual food for fines drive will be Feb. 1 through Feb. 28 at all 14 library branches of Whitman County Library. This drive allows library users to donate nonperishable food and toiletry items at any branch of the library and waive up to $10 in outstanding library fines. Those who do not face outstanding fines are encouraged to also make contributions. All donated items will be given to the food bank and used in the community where they were collected.     The Jan. 23 trial date scheduled here for Tobin Phillips, 20, former Albion resident who has been charged here with second-degree child assault, was struck Jan. 13 in superior court. Phillips is in jail in Kern County, Calif., at Bakersfield, on a charge that he murdered an eight-month-old boy by suffocating him in Tehachapi, Calif.     Renee Allert, St. John, was unhurt in a rollover accident Jan. 17 on Highway 195 seven miles north of Colfax.     St. John Park and Recreation District is heading back to the drawing board after a request for proposals failed to receive any bids to replace the district's struggling pool boiler.
