    After being stopped by snow Friday when they were booked for a trip to Liberty Christian, Colton girls Saturday blasted Pomeroy 83-18 for their second league win.     Applications are now open and available for the 2014 scholarship program conducted by First Wind. Entering its fifth year, First Wind Scholars will make scholarships available to qualified high school seniors in communities where the company has projects in operation. High school seniors who attend schools where First Wind projects a operating are eligible to apply. That includes Garfield, Oakesdale, Rosalia, St. John, Spangle and Tekoa.     The Nutrition Program and COAST Transportation received a sizable donation from Palouse Wind on Friday, Dec. 20.   • Tekoa Park Road project funded

    Guardrails and a sidewalk will likely be installed by next year on a section of Park Road in Tekoa. Funding for the project will include a $733,000 grant from the Transportation Improvement Board. Announced last week, the money will allow the two-tenths of a mile road section to be made more pedestrian and truck-friendly, as it connects around a curve at the southeast section of Tekoa.   • Coroner issues finding on death at Rock Lake

    Whitman County coroner Peter Martin Friday issued a determination after an investigation of the death of Tiffiny Brennan, 44, St. John, on Rock Lake Road Saturday, Dec. 14. Martin said after a detailed investigation and a review of the investigation report from the Sheriff’s office he determined Mrs. Brennan died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.     New Garfield mayor Ray McCown will take office again on Jan. 1.   • Spring-like weather melts most of Friday’s snow blast

    Although a couple of days last week felt more spring-like than winter, the county had another taste of the white stuff starting late Friday morning and lasting into Saturday morning. A winter storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Spokane starting at 10 a.m. Friday and lasting through 5 a.m. Saturday. Snowfall was light at first late Friday morning, but in the afternoon the snow got heavier and the wind began blowing.
