    Mahlon E. Kriebel|Dec 23, 2013

I read about problems and possible solutions in education daily. Several years ago, on Front Line, educators attempted to address the short attention span of students from elementary school to the university. Educators did agree that the basis of the problem stems from the myriad of electronic devices, the digital age, competing for students time. Some teachers argued that there is no problem. Others have demonstrated that student performance has decreased. There is controversy as to the validity of multitasking to the extent that innate human...

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. Before I went to college, I made a little money painting houses part-time. But after I became a college-educated man, I got serious about a career and began painting houses full-time. I was contemplating this complete-circle process one hot day in southwest Kansas, a piece of real estate that completely disproves the theory of roundness as a property of the planet Earth. Show a resident of this flat place a pancake, and he’d ask, “What’s that incredibly round and mountai...

During the holidays, our thoughts naturally turn to giving — not just giving gifts but donating our time and money to charities and community programs. This time of year, we’re reminded that, with all our frailties, we human beings are a pretty generous lot. According to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, 88 percent of American households donate to charity. In 2012, Americans donated more than $316 billion to nonprofit organizations. As it turns out, philanthropy is as old as civilization itself. One of the earliest recorded don...

Gen. George Washington’s army retreated from New York in ignominy in November 1776. As it moved through New Jersey, Lt. James Monroe, the future president, stood by the road and counted the troops: 3,000 left from an original force of 30,000. In December 1776, the future of America hung on the fate of a bedraggled army barely a step ahead of annihilation. The Americans confronted about two-thirds of the strength of the British army, and half its navy, not to mention thousands of German mercenaries. The defense of New York was barely worthy of t...

Over a hundred years ago, a young girl wanted to know if Santa really existed. Her friends were telling her not to believe. So, she wrote her newspaper to get the truth. This is the famous reply from the editor, Francis Church. Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been afflicted by skepticism in a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s are little. In this great universe of our...

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Dec 23, 2013

While the Colton bus was seen going north, then south on Highway 195 for a canceled game at Liberty Christian, the Rosalia bus pressed on to Palouse in the falling snow Friday night. Inside the Vikings’ gym, a matchup between the Spartans and Gar-Pal suggested just how good the home team may be. After a contested first quarter, Gar-Pal (7-0) took control on a big night for Tyler Thurman, who scored 25 points while Matt Holbrook had 15 and Jesse Lopez 11. For Rosalia (1-3), Craig Nelson led w...
