Their aim is to decrease the chances of a patient being re-admitted, said Whitman chief clinical officer, Denise Fowler.     Whitman County’s real estate market has seen a marked increase in activity over the past year. Home sales during the third quarter of 2009 were 16 percent higher than the same period in 2008, according to a housing market report issued earlier this month by the Washington Center for Real Estate Research. New home construction also rose, with the 28 building permits issued during the third quarter a 22 percent increase over 2008.   • Offer $5,000 reward in safe heist

    A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects in a safe heist from a residence in north central Whitman County, according to Sheriff Brett Myers. The sheriff said a John Deere safe was taken from the residence last Friday night or Saturday morning. The safe contained numerous firearms, cash, rare coins, hundreds of silver dollars, bank notes, jewelry and property deeds. The reward has been offered by a private party....

  • Wells prepped for aquifer test

    Colfax wells were slated to be fitted last week with monitors to prepare them for an area-wide pumping shutdown to measure aquifer impact. The Colfax test coincides with similar shutdowns in Moscow, Pullman and other members of the Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee. The towns and universities will fill their reservoirs and then shut off the well pumps for a day and measure the result, if any, on the aquifer.     Whitman County Treasurer Robert Lothspeich lowered his 2010 revenue projections from Whitman County investments this week after the state’s Local Government Investment Pool again lowered earning rates. Interest off investments were originally slated to generate near $500,000 next year, but continually falling interest rates have whittled that down.
