  • Garfield taxpayers receive revised bills

    Joe Smillie|Apr 22, 2010

Garfield residents can now join the rest of Whitman County in paying their property taxes after the county straightened out its tax billing. The county treasurer’s office sent out revised statements to approximately 360 Garfield taxpayers Tuesday afternoon with correct amounts due. Original statements sent out last month included inaccurate information. Garfield taxpayers now have 30 days to pay their first half taxes before late fees are assessed. First half taxes are typically due by April 30, but Garfield residents will be allowed an e...

  • Word on the street - April 22, 2010

    Apr 22, 2010

Skies cleared and temperatures finally hit spring levels over the past week. What’s your favorite sign of spring’s arrival? Dave Holtzheimer, Colfax “Daffodils. No question.” Skip Hollis, Colfax (Points to his postal service-issue shorts.) Does that put you in more danger of dog attacks, though? “Yeah, I guess they wouldn’t be able to grab a hold of my pant leg instead of leg meat.” Fred DeClue Jr., Colfax “Flowers.” What’s your favorite kind of flowers? “Roses. I know they’re kind of a year-round flower, but they’re my favorite.” Janet Schmi... Full story

  • Bruce Cameron - Bruce the Wedding Planner

    Apr 22, 2010

    W. Bruce Cameron I have a second cousin who, as a woman in her 20s, is considerably younger than I. Well, not “considerably.” She’s a bit younger. She’s my age. At any rate, she lives in my area, many miles from her parents, which she insists is due to no intent on her part, though when she graduated from college she submitted resumes everywhere but in her home state. She is planning her wedding, and her father asked me to sit in on his behalf and represent his point of view. I thought it was adorable that he thought the father of the bride w...

  • Don Brunell - Kessler’s civility will be missed

    Apr 22, 2010

Long-time Washington lawmaker Sid Snyder had a sense of humor, dignity and respect that permeated the halls of the state Capitol for nearly a half century. A grocer from Long Beach in Southwest Washington, Sid set the tone for our Legislature. After Sid retired, Hoquiam Rep. Lynn Kessler kept that protocol alive. Now, after 18 years in the state House, she is hanging it up as well. That is good for her and not so good for the rest of us. Snyder and Kessler are Democrats in a Democrat-leaning state, but Republican legislators like Jeannette...

  • Adele Ferguson - Obama’s shortcomings —an opener for Hillary?

    Apr 22, 2010

OK, HILLARY, your dearest wish for many years has been to go down in history as a better president than Bill, so go for it. The current president is in such deep doo doo there’ll never be a better time than now. Hand in your resignation as Secretary of State explaining that as a patriotic American you cannot honor a pledge not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries that are in compliance with the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty even if they attack us with biological or chemical weapons. Appeasement and disarmament have never b... Full story

  • Opinion - Levy approval essential to Colfax schools

    Apr 22, 2010

The Colfax School District levy is again in front of the voter. The first version was rejected by voters in February. This second effort addresses some of the complaints that prompted its rejection in the first place. The amount of money being requested has been cut, and it is now virtually the same as the levies approved in the past. Support of this levy request is essential to the district and the functioning of the schools. The levy revenues pay for a variety of school programs and services. Not enough financing comes from the state to...

  • STRANGE BUT TRUE - April 22, 2010

    Samantha Weaver|Apr 22, 2010

    * It was beloved American comedian and actor Bob Hope who made the following extremely sage observation: “People who throw kisses are hopelessly lazy.” * Next time you’re in Tinseltown, remember that it is unlawful to herd more than 3,000 sheep at a time down Hollywood Boulevard. * In the naming of American states, there are quite a few that never quite made it. It’s interesting to speculate about the possibilities, though. For instance, if you currently reside in the state of Kentucky or parts of Tennessee, but for the whimsy of fate you cou...

  • My two cents: In search of the elusive Rose Creek beaver

    Jeslyn Lemke|Apr 22, 2010

It isn’t every day I can escape the office to chase down rumors of a renegade beaver outside Albion. Or get paid to wander through one of the remaining patches of natural Palouse prairie. The beaver has felled many trees. But last Thursday, April 15, news of this derelict beaver lured this reporter out of the office for an afternoon of poking around the nature preserve Rose Creek. Rose Creek is a little-known 12-acre nature preserve with a trail, located about four miles outside Albion. It is owned by the Palouse Clearwater Environmental I...

Thrust of the zone is to combine WSU research with private sector industry to develop new industries and create jobs. “We don’t have a long, long term focus, we’re just looking for some human resource money to keep it...
