Robert W. Haxton Funeral mass for Robert W. (Bob) Haxton, 82, life-long Colfax resident, will be Friday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Rosary service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at the church, and a graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the St. John cemetery. Tapestry concert tour to be Forreys’ farewell Tapestry Women’s Choir will open its spring concert series in Colfax at the United Methodist Church Monday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. The theme of the concert is “Freedom” and features songs of freedom from around the world. These concerts will be bittersweet for the choir because the founder and director Dale Forrey has accepted a job in Olympia and will be leaving Tapestry at the end of this concert series. Rosalia Rosalia FFA annual plant sale begins next Monday, April 26, at 8 a.m. Students will sell bedding plants, numerous varieties of tomatoes and a number of garden flowers like pansies, petunias and marigolds. Many of the plants have been growing in the school’s greenhouse since winter vacation. Architect Larry Kom, holding board, explains building changes just outside the new elevator on the second floor of the Whitman County Library during the library board meeting April 13. The board toured the library renovation project during their meeting. Kom reported to the board that construction crews are approximately 19 days behind schedule as a result of unexpected storm drain and excavation problems. Crews are working to make up for lost time, but re-opening of the library along with the grand re-opening ceremony will both be delayed....
A bid from Renstrom Homes, Inc of Garfield, has been accepted by the Garfield United Methodist Church board of Trustees to renovate the sanctuary ceiling and walls. Renstrom Homes will remove water damaged plaster, hang, tape and texture sheet rock and paint the interior walls and ceiling of the church sanctuary and interior entrance steps area. Church members are in the process of removing the piano, organ and church pews, so that scaffolding can be set up. Work began April 20 and will be completed in June. Nineteen Colton junior high and high school students traveled to Eastern Washington University in Cheney to compete in the 2010 state Science Olympiad tournament. The team consisted of 15 seventh through ninth graders with four alternates. The average size enrollment of the schools was 700 students, and Colton placed 12th among 20 teams. Jim and Gail Nardone When Gail Nardone and husband Jim retired and settled in Garfield in 2008, they expected life from then on to be leisurely. Tekoa students will plant 65 trees and shrubs along the banks of Hangman Creek April 30, beginning at 9 a.m. The annual project has to date added more than 400 trees to the banks of the creek over the past few years. “The roots are holding up the bank so it doesn’t erode any further,” said Tammy Mendoza, sixth grade teacher at Tekoa. Revenues are up and expenses are down from last year, but Whitman County officials are still concerned about the outlook for year-end finances. “Our cash flow, revenue and expenditures are looking better,” Sharron Cunningham, assistant county finance director, told county leaders in her monthly finance report Monday. “But that budget deficit is pretty worrisome.” County officials currently expect to end the year $338,000 in the hole, nearly twice the $162,000 deficit the county had at the end of 2009. A Whitman County board earlier this month gave Eric Christiansen of Lewiston permission to build a dirtbike track near the Port of Wilma across the Snake River from Clarkston. The track would be developed on Port of Whitman land. Neighbors of the proposed site were concerned about the impacts a motorcycle track could have on their land.
