    After a two and a half hour debate, DeAtley Construction was awarded a 10-year permit to operate an asphalt plant outside Colton at the Entel Rock Quarry. The county board of adjustment granted the permit at a public hearing April 15. Two families living close to the quarry protested at the hearing. They contended heavy, loud trucks moving in and out of the quarry for the asphalt plant would be a major nuisance.   • Weather spurs building rebound

    A warm winter led to more building activity in the unincorporated areas of Whitman County during the first quarter of 2010. The quarterly report filed by Dan Gladwill, county building official, listed 48 permits issued during the first three months of 2010, nearly double the amount issued during the same period 2009. Gladwill said the 2009 first quarter total of 26 permits was an abnormal dip because of the heavy snowfall. In the first quarter 2008, Gladwill issued 45 permits.     St. John’s Front Street lost an institution last week, as the Food City market shut its doors last week. Long-time owner Bob Thompson said operation expenses had risen to the point that he could no longer cover the bills. “Basically, with the way this economy is going, there was just no way we could get enough business to pay for the overhead,” said Thompson.     Amid a landslide of heated protest letters and phonecalls, the state fish and wildlife department announced April 21 they are canceling their Bonnie Lake water corridor proposal. Regional game department director Kevin Robinette called the Gazette April 21 to say the department had canceled. The department now cannot apply for the $3.6 million grant until 2012, he said.     As of April 19, 1,034 of 2,400 mailed ballots on the Colfax School levy election have been received back on the Colfax school levy proposal. The levy is up for a vote after the district’s first levy proposal failed in the Feb. 9 special election. The votes will be counted the night of April 27, deadline day for return of the ballots.     St. John/Endicott senior Lindsay Mills, center, explains the process by which she created the painting at left to spectators at Mary Bertrand’s high school art class’ first ever art walk Monday night in the school gymnasium. Mills painted the woman in the scene by dotting paint onto the canvas using Q-Tips. The whole project took her three months to complete.
