    Every year about this time, we compare the commercial airplane sales of Boeing and its European arch rival, Airbus. Over the last decade, the results haven’ worked in Boeing’s favor. Airbus has posted higher sales numbers as Boeing struggled to get its new 787 into production. However this year, Boeing, which assembles the bulk of its commercial aircraft in the Puget Sound area, is the clear winner.     Basketball season started rough for Whitman contenders with Tekoa/Oakesdale, Rosalia, Garfield/Palouse and Colton all sustaining defeats. Colton, which landed a game short of the state finals last year, bowed 60-53 to a visiting Grangeville team Saturday at Colton despite 17 points and 10 boards hauled down by Dalton Patchen.     Colton and Tekoa/Oakesdale girls last week kept the same power mode in place when they started the basketball season. The Nighthawks Friday posted a big 49-32 .win at Oakesdale over the visiting Asotin Panthers. Colton opened the season on their home court with a 71-26 win over a Grangeville team which arrived with a 2-2 record.     Colfax wrestlers placed fourth in the team scoring Saturday at the Davenport Invitational. Three of the grapplers placed second after advancing to the championship round in their weight divisions. Each finished with a 2-1 mark after being defeated in the title rounds. The Bulldogs finished with a total record of 15-13 for the nine wrestlers on the competition.     Colfax girls launched their hoop session with big wins at St. John, in the SunDome and in the home opener Tuesday night against the Waitsburg/Prescott Cardinals. The Bulldogs will now put their new 3-0 record up against the St. Georges who will come to town Friday for the start of the league campaign.     After fielding some inquiries from potential buyers, the county Monday wound up with no bids for the purchase of the Community Education and Training Center, formerly the Elks Lodge, during the Whitman County Commissioners meeting on Monday. The county had set Monday to open sealed bids on the structure at Main and Wall streets in downtown Colfax. Minimum bid was set at $60,000.     Residents and visitors of Endicott launched large paper lanterns at the community lot Saturday as part to the town’s Christmas celebration. Wide-eyed children and smiling adults released 66 lanterns into the night sky. The floating lights and the town’s Christmas fireworks display which followed came from residents’ donations.     Palouse was selected as one of seven Washington towns to participate in a Transportation Improvement Board pilot program to install LED lights, and study its cost effects. TIB Executive Director Stevan Gorcester said that LED lights have started to be installed in Washington cities for about five years. “The energy is lower and the maintenance cost is massively lower,” he said.   • Endicott man sentenced

    Jared J. Wold, 26, Endicott, was sentenced to 366 days in jail with 357 suspended Friday after pleading guilty to an amended charge of possession of stolen property. Wold was also fined $5,000 with $3,500 suspended and the option of working off $2,250 of the balance with public service work.     The Garfield city council considered city-employee raises, garbage rates and wind-turbine zoning at its meeting last Wednesday, Nov. 28.     Bringing back the Teapot Café in LaCrosse is the latest cause for LaCrosse Community Pride, a nonprofit that formed after the town grocery store closed in 2009. Due to failing health, long-time owner Cheri Garrett shut the doors on the west county eatery last month. Carol Audett of Jasper Trucking is gathering information from interested potential operators for Community Pride. She reported the group has yet to choose an operator.     The WSU Rural Design Initiative will present concepts Dec. 13 at the Uniontown Community Market Building.     Seltice Road, a short cutoff across a bridge about five miles south of Tekoa, will remain on the county’s road system for the coming years. County commissioners Monday decided to drop a proposal to vacate the road after neighborhood residents two weeks ago objected to a proposed vacation.     Whitman County commissioners still hold out hope for Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Center, even with Spokane County bowing out of the joint project six weeks ago.
