Colfax girls post 3-0 start with defense a key factor

Colfax girls launched their hoop session with big wins at St. John, in the SunDome and in the home opener Tuesday night against the Waitsburg/Prescott Cardinals. The Bulldogs will now put their new 3-0 record up against the St. Georges who will come to town Friday for the start of the league campaign.

Heather Siegel of the Eagles and Scout Cai of the Bulldogs try to find the hook Friday night in the Bulldog-Eagle clash at St. John.

Tuesday in the home opener the Bulldogs staked a 59-19 win over the visiting Cardinals. Coach Corey Baerlocher put all his players in the game against the Cardinals after the game went to quick time.

Junior Nicole Sheer led the Bulldogs with 12 points against the Cardinals, and Taylor Larsen hit nine.

The home start followed a long trip to Yakima Saturday where the kickoff classic bestowed Hall of Fame honors on the Colfax teams who won the A division championship in four straight campaigns, 2004-08.

The feat at that time was unprecedented.

This year’s Bulldog team then took to the court and defeated the LaSalle girls who commuted to the Dome from Union Gap.

Colfax pegged a 50-40 win after stacking the 10-spot lead in the last quarter.

The two clubs posted a 33-33 tie at the end of the third quarter with LaSalle erasing a six point Colfax halftime lead in the their quarter. Sophomore Amara Huber led the Colfax offense with 13 points at the dome.

Friday night in the league opener at St. John, a veteran Eagles club cracked an early lead against the Bulldog.

Colfax staked a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, and the scoreboard on the SJE side locked up at the 11 mark while the Bulldogs rolled up a 10-point lead before the halftime break.

Colfax defense continued tough into the third quarter and shutout Eagles scorers during the frame. The SJE point total for the second half was six.

Bailey Mackleit topped the steals chart with four. Larsen hit 12 against the Eagles and Amelie Bruya hit three three pointers.
