    Colfax Junior Morgan Willson will return to the Sun Willows golf course in Pasco Saturday to defend her state B cross country title. Willson, who is undefeated in B competition, earned her ticket to state by leading the NE regional entrants by 37 seconds Friday over a wet course at Plante’s Ferry Park in the Spokane Valley.     St. John senior Erin Schuster rolled out to an early lead and kept it last Thursday at Pomeroy’s golf course to win the SE girls top ticket to the state show in Pasco Saturday. Schuster finished with a dramatic three second win over Asotin’s Sadie Johnson with a 21:56. Adding to the Eagle success was a third place finish by freshman Heather Siegel who was in the hunt for most of the race and finished just six seconds back of Johnson.   • Colfax begins state quest after wrapping NE string

    Colfax netters start their quest for another run at the state title tonight in a home round of the NE qualifications. Springdale and St. George’s play an elim match at 5 p.m. tonight in the Colfax gym and the winner will go up against Colfax. Qualifiers out of tonight’s rounds will head for Reardan Saturday where matches in both gyms will determine which three teams advance to Yakima next week.   • Nominees tabbed for FSA seat

    Two nominations were put forth for election to represent the eastern third of Whitman County on the United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency’s central county committee. The nominees were Joe Horlacher, who farms west of Tekoa, and Gregory Stout, who farms in the Colton area. Ballots will soon be sent to county farmers and must be returned by Monday, Dec. 6.   • Landfill loan to cover elections office project

    Whitman County commissioners Monday approved a loan from the county’s solid waste fund to the auditor’s budget to cover costs of constructing new office space for the elections department. Amount of the loan was undetermined, as was the payoff date. A two percent interest rate was put on the loan. James Elmore Construction of Spokane is currently remodeling the elections office space under a $489,040 contract. Right near the doughnut shop is a bridge where three fishermen sit in folding chairs and smell as if they’re rotting in the sun.     Photos of a former Colfax farm woman are among those featured in the showcase of Washington State’s traveling centennial celebrating women in Washington winning the right to vote in 1910. City Attorney Bruce Ensley called the short session at the end of the meeting, and the council took no action after it concluded.     State ag officials have told Whitman County to use or lose it’s 2,000-acre allotment under the Palouse Prairie portion of the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement program. In 2008, the federal Farm Service Agency and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife created the program to restore or enhance 8,200 acres of wildlife habitat across the state. The agencies set aside 2,000 acres in Whitman County to expand and protect the unique Palouse Prairie.     Whitman County plans to buy the Gnaedinger rock quarry north of Palouse. Public Works Director Mark Storey told commissioners Monday the county has leased the quarry for years, but the Gnaedinger family now wants to sell the nine-acres.     Whitman County’s official valuation of the new WalMart Supercenter building in Pullman dropped $2.5 million after the company challenged the assessment. Assessor Joe Reynolds reported Monday he had dropped his office’s valuation from $15 million to $12.5 million. Wal-Mart had requested a reduction to $10 million. WalMart had appealed Reynold’s assessment to the county’s board of equalization, the board that officially decides disputed tax values.     With declining prices for its stock offering, the company looking to site a wind farm near Oakesdale cancelled plans to trade its stock publicly last Thursday, Oct. 28.     A Clarkston man who reportedly became too intoxicated to hike out of a canyon along the Snake River was located by deputies and brought out of the canyon at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct 27, three hours after deputies received the missing person report. The report by Deputy Sgt. Chris Chapman, said they found the hiker, Benny F. Elder, 37, sleeping. He had sustained scrapes and abrasions.     Ownership of the Jones Schoolhouse has been turned over to Whitman County. The school was moved from its long-time site east of Dusty to the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds this summer to stand as a tribute to the county’s history of one-room schoolhouses. County commissioners signed a memorandum of agreement between the county and the Palouse Empire Fair Foundation Monday.
