Erin Schuster cracks win in SE race

St. John senior Erin Schuster rolled out to an early lead and kept it last Thursday at Pomeroy’s golf course to win the SE girls top ticket to the state show in Pasco Saturday. Schuster finished with a dramatic three second win over Asotin’s Sadie Johnson with a 21:56.

Adding to the Eagle success was a third place finish by freshman Heather Siegel who was in the hunt for most of the race and finished just six seconds back of Johnson.

The two SJE qualifications were notched from the slim SE allotment for the girls state B race: just one team and five individual slots.

Sophomore Caleb Rich, who made the state show last year, placed ninth to make the top 10 cut for the SE boys. Seth Deal of Waitsburg/Prescott won the boys race at 16:48. Rich had a time of 18:58.

Asotin won the girls team event with a 24. Isabell Benito of Waitsburg/ Prescott won the other individual slot for the girls with a 22:24.

The Eagles placed second for team honors with a 31, and Pomeroy placed third with a 73. Other finishers for the SJE girls were Megan Gfeller, 11th at 23:21, Jade Porubeck 12th at 23:40, Annie Bailey 16th at 24:18, and Marika McCue 24th at 28:38.

Other finishers for the boys were John Quinton 17th at 19:57, Alex McCue 22 at 20:20, Mattie Tedde 27th at 20:47, Darcy Stamper of LaCrosse, 30th at 21:10, and Evan Jones, 33rd at 21:21.

Team scores for the boys race were Tri-Cities Prep 22, Waistburg/Prescott 61, Asotin 82, SJE-LaX 105, Dayton 108, Liberty Christian 156 and Pomeroy 171.
