    Ted Blaszak, Monte Morgan and Fred Wagner, officers of the Tekoa Trail and Trestle Association, have been scheduled to present a program at the Washington State Trails Coalition's 11th biennial trails conference in Richland Oct. 13-15. Their session will be titled “Taking Fast Action to Save the Longest Rail-Trail in America, the John Wayne Pioneer Trail.” The title of the conference is “Creating Community, Connecting Community” and is sponsored by REI Co-Op, Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and Green Trails Maps....

    A new three-year contract is in effect for Colfax School District teachers. Ratified by the school board Sept. 12, the new deal includes changes in working conditions, benefits, due process and the Teacher-Principal Evaluation Program (TPEP).   • Tekoa to keep burn pile open all year

    Tekoa's burn pile was the subject of city council discussion Aug. 15. The council decided to keep it open throughout the year except for during burn bans. Mayor John Jaeger suggested to close it except for two months in fall and spring. The pile was relocated two years ago to a spot just south of the city hall shop. It is normally burned twice per year, in the spring, as permitted, and late in October.     A small water leak at the Port of Whitman Business Air Center (Colfax airport) was recently repaired after an older pipe at the airport had started to leak. “We noticed water was seeping out,” said Port Executive Director Joe Poiré. “Trucks were driving over it, and even though it was three or four feet down, the seam broke on it.     Former Tekoa resident Susannah Scaroni took seventh in the women's marathon at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games on Sept. 18. Two teammates medaled. Scaroni, the daughter of Barbara and the late Warren Scaroni, lives and trains in Champagne, Ill. She finished eighth at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Tatyana McFadden (Clarksville, Md.) secured silver alongside U.S. teammate Amanda McGrory (Savoy, Ill.) with bronze.     After a two-year search with the Washington State Department of Ecology threatening fines, Mayor Ray McCown and the Town of Garfield have hired a Level II sewer plant operator. Reuel Klempel started on the job Sept. 6. A Level IV certified operator, Klempel lives in Eltopia and originally interviewed in Garfield last year.     The City of Tekoa voted to turn down three bids for work at the community center and the adjoining Empire Theater. The project was partially funded by a $34,000 grant award from the county’s .09 tax program. The $34,000 has been designated to help pay for new restrooms, an improved heating system for the community center and a walkway between the adjoining buildings.     The Port of Whitman is nearing completion of the sale of two buildings at the Port of Wilma, Port Properties and Development Manager Debbie Snell reported at the Port meeting Sept. 15.
