  • Pullman chamber issues call for 4th of July help, donations

    Pullman Chamber of Commerce has issued its annual call for volunteers and contributions for the Fourth of July celebration in Sunnyside Park. Volunteers are needed for children’s activities, food and beverage service, sales of novelty items and clean-up. Also, the chamber has issued a call for donations of fruit pies and other desserts.   • Boating safety classes

    Two class sessions on boating safety have been scheduled at the end of the month. Boaters between 12 to 40 years of age are now required to have the certified card when operating a boat with an engine of 15 horsepower or more. The required instruction extends over two nights with classes set June 20-21 and June 26 and June 28 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in the Public Service Building at Colfax.     Palouse swim team manager Kelly Dow issued a call this week for swim team recruits. Interested swimmers are urged to sign up at the pool June 19 at noon to register for the team and celebrate with popsicles. The practice schedule will begin the next day, June 20. Practices will be Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. Swim competitors must be able to swim the length of the pool, 25 yards.     Oakesdale Lodge #55 of Free and Accepted Masons of Washington did their school year end Bikes for Books programs with Tekoa, Oakesdale, Garfield and Palouse. Winners were Jacob Anderson, Garfield; Lily Bren, Palouse; Marlay Brownson, Tekoa, and Ryan Henning and Karl Cooper of Oakesdale. Henning was the original winner but said he already had a bike and asked the teacher to draw another name which resulted in Cooper receiving the prize.     Colfax School board approved three staff hirings at their meeting Monday night. Heather York was approved as a sixth-grade teacher at Jennings Elementary, non-continuing for 2012-13. She takes the place for a teacher who will be on a leave of absence. Shala Vorderbrueggen was approved for up to 30 hours per week over the summer for extended school year teaching of higher-needs students.   • Officers plan extra patrols over holiday

    Extras patrols aimed at keeping drunken drivers off the roadways will be conducted July 4-5. The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, WSU Police, Pullman and Colfax Police departments and the Washington State Patrol will participate in the extra emphasis patrols. The patrols are funded by a grant from Washington Traffic Safety Commission and supported by the Spokane County Target Zero Task Force.     Dusty Geraldine Steiger, daughter of Duane and Tarri Steiger, graduated from the University of Washington last weekend. Duane, Tarri, their son Stetson, Geraldine’s fiancé Spencer Scholz and KoDee Pruett attended. Geraldine’s Political Science department graduation was Friday and the overall University graduation was Saturday. They also attended the Mariner’s no-hitter against the L.A. Serving will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. with Innkeeper Donna Gwinn offering “scrumptious” menu choices at a rate of $8 for adults and $5 children under 12.
