    Kim Hinnenkamp, graduating senior at Colfax High School, has been awarded a $30,000 scholarship from the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She is the daugther of John and Kristie Hinnenkamp. Cornish scholarships are awarded based on review of a students artwork which is presented prior to acceptance in the school and on high school grades.     Anglers who are interested in fishing but don’t have a fishing license can get in on the action during Free Fishing Weekend, June 6-7. During those two days, no license will be required to fish or gather shellfish in any waters open to fishing in Washington state.     Help Needed! The 1948 Harley-Davidson bought new by the City in 1952 was recently put up for sale by the Mayor and Police Chief. They wanted to use the money to buy another police car. They said it had no historical value. The sale of this motorcycle for that reason made a large group of people feel that it was necessary to work to save it from being lost forever.     The Transportation Safety Administration is going through a shakeup. Reportedly, the agency failed in detecting dangerous items passing through security at airports. The items were brought by TSA agents posing as passengers. They were to test the integrity of the security system.     St. John/Endicott boys rolled up 14 points to finish 19th among 31 entries in the state 1B finals Saturday at Cheney, and the Eagle girls place in a tie for 23rd with nine among 33 teams in the girls side. Lummi topped the boys meet with 54, and Mt. Vernon Christian topped the girls’ side with 59.     Mary Ann Jacobs raps one for Colton. For the first time in seven years, the 1B state softballchampionship is in the hands of another school besides Colton High School.     Colfax boys won the state B team title Thursday at Columbia Point with four golfers finishing in the top 10 for a team placing total of 57.5. Hunter Weitze again led the team with a 73, again one stroke back of Kenneth Sheldon of Ilwaco who carded another 72 on the second day. Kasey Johnson finish eighth with a 78 round for a 159 total, and Chance Weitze finished one stroke back of Johnson with a 160 total after hitting an 81 on the second day.     The goal was to bring home a trophy from state, and in order to do it the route could be a long haul; four games on the second day of the state 2B tournament in Yakima.     Parker Warwick off to a fast start in the 100 meter hurdles at the state track meet Saturday. Colfax competitors put down some strong marks at the 2B track finals which were part of the three-division state show over the weekend at Roos Field.     Senior Mark Webber leads the congratulations line as the Bulldogs take the lead in the state seminal against Toledo in Centralia. The Bulldogs won 4-2 to advance to the final.     A WSU student accused of second-degree rape appeared in Whitman County Superior Court Friday for a pre-trial hearing. Ruddy Aladina, 24, was arrested in December after a WSU student went to Pullman Regional Hospital asking for a rape kit and reported that Aladina allegedly forced her to have sex with him in his apartment after the two had met on the dance floor at Stubblefields.   • Summer chip-sealing set for 34 miles of road

    Whitman County Commissioners Monday approved more than $650,000 in seal coating projects for the summer. The work will span approximately 34 miles of road and is to be paid for by a combination of $650,000 in state Arterial Preservation money and an additional 10 to 30 percent in county gas tax proceeds. “June is asphalt season,” said Mark Storey, Public Works Director.     Kara McMurray, 25, a 2014 WSU graduate with a degree in communication with an emphasis in journalism and media production, has joined the staff of the Whitman County Gazette. After graduating at WSU, McMurray accepted an internship opportunity in Salt Lake City to work for the Church News, a weekly publication of the Deseret News. She moved back to Pullman when the internship ended and began seeking job opportunities.   • Palouse eying speed limit cuts on river roads

    Whitman County Public Works Department has completed a speed report on two roads in Palouse at the request of the town. Looking at all safety hazards on the Palouse River Road and completing an engineer’s report on whether to reduce the speed limit, the county engineer recommended a 35-mph speed limit on the gravel roads which run along the river on both sides from Palouse east toward the state line.     Stewart and Sandi Nereim have been named the 2015 Rosalia Battle Days Grand Marshals. Stewart is retiring as pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Rosalia after nearly 26 years, and Sandi is retiring as the head cook of the Rosalia schools.   • Storms take heavy toll on county roads

    Recent storms have caused an estimated $200,000 to $400,000 in damage to county roads, according to Public Works Director Mark Storey.
