  • Ride for a Cure benefit Sunday

    The annual Ride for a Cure benefit will be motoring through the Palouse Sunday, June 5. The sixth annual benefit ride will meet at the Colfax Les Schwab for registration at 9 a.m. Sunday, with the riders leaving by 10:30 a.m. Donations will be accepted at registration Sunday morning. Deanna Leinweber, one of the organizers for the event, said the ride was started in memory of riders who have died from cancer. “We lost people that we rode with,” she said. “It's been going on for eight or nine years, but only six with the Relay.” Leinweb...

  • Record number of voters turn out in state ballot

    Ballots cast in the state's May 24 election set a record for a presidential primary, according to a report from the Office of Secretary of State. Spokesman David Ammons said nearly 1.5 million ballots had been received by May 26. The election was May 24, and about 1.36 million had been counted as of Thursday, May 26. All of the 1.5 million that have arrived were postmarked before or on May 24, so they could still be counted.     Dusty Daughters of the late Bob and Marie Ackerman, who spent the weekend at the Parsonage Bed and Breakfast, included Robin Legg, Sisters, Ore.; Ann Petzel, Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; Laura Burnside McElligott, North Bend, Ore. and Lisa Emtman, Valleyford. They visited the cemeteries of Dusty, Hay, LaCrosse, Endicott and Colfax during their stay.     Avalon Health Care Group and KIP Development announced they have entered into an agreement under which a 52,000 square foot senior living community will be constructed adjacent to Pullman Regional Hospital. It will replace the existing Avalon Care Center-Pullman skilled nursing facility located across town.   • Garfield residents petition for recall of Mayor McCown

    A petition for a vote for the recall of Garfield Mayor Raymond McCown was submitted to Whitman County officials last week. The petition was submitted to the county auditor, who in turn forwarded it to the county prosecutor for review. Under provisions of state law, the prosecutor is required to review the petition and draft a ballot proposal.     The Colfax boys golf team finished fourth in the state finals at Meadow Wood in Liberty Lake May 24-25 with a 25.5 team total. Ilwaco took the team honors with a 29.5. The Bulldogs booked the score with two freshmen in the final round. Augie Allenbach tied for sixth place with a 158, and Bennett Gray tied for ninth with a 163.     The 21st edition of Relay for Life in Colfax was almost derailed last week when event organizer Gail Webster found out that McDonald Park, the chosen location for the event, was not actually available. Webster said she had previously been told a baseball tournament at the park was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. June 10, so Relay organizers could set up the event throughout the day and start at 6 p.m. the same day of the tournament.   • County schools to graduate 287 seniors over two weeks

    Graduating seniors will take the “Pomp and Circumstance” march over the next two weekends to receive their diplomas. Eight county schools combined will graduate 129 students, and Pullman High School will graduate 158, making 287 county-wide for the class of 2016. That total is down 19 from the 306 students in the class of 2015. The 287 graduate count is down by almost 50 students from 2011 when 323 seniors received their diplomas.
