Bulldog golfers take state fourth

The Colfax boys golf team finished fourth in the state finals at Meadow Wood in Liberty Lake May 24-25 with a 25.5 team total. Ilwaco took the team honors with a 29.5.

The Bulldogs booked the score with two freshmen in the final round. Augie Allenbach tied for sixth place with a 158, and Bennett Gray tied for ninth with a 163.

Coach Steve Jones credited Allenbach with taking 10 strokes off his first-round score with a 74 on the second day. Allenbach actually had a one-under score rolling on the par 72 course until he booked a triple bogey in the last hole. Despite the derailment, Allenbach dropped a five-foot putt to keep the Colfax team score one point ahead of Tonasket. Allenbach was 84-74 for the two days, and Bennett Gray finished 81-82.

Chase Weitze, who has had trouble with his putting game, missed the cut with a 91 on the first round, five above the cut score.

Tekoa/Rosalia's Dawson Strobel tied for fourth at 157 (80-77).

Davenport's Palmer Guhlke, who shot a 73 the second day, took the state medal with a 147, four stokes ahead of Illwaco's Blake Kukukla.

Kaysa Panke of Davenport finished with a 156 to lead the girls. Northwest Christian won the team honors on the girls side with a 20.

McKenna Davis of Colfax placed 12th for the girls team with a score of 192 (94-98). Coach Jones credited Davis with toughing out the two-day event despite a knee ligament injury which she sustained in the district round.
