Colfax girls finish sixth; Scout Cai sets vault mark

Colfax senior Scout Cai soared to 12-3 and a state 2B pole vault record at Cheney.

Colfax girls finished sixth in the state 2B track meet with 51.5 points when the action wrapped up Saturday, May 28, at EWU’s Roos Field in Cheney. St. George’s, which collected a stack of points in the distance races, topped the 2B girls with 71 points. The Dragons topped Okanogan, the pre-meet favorite, by a half point.

Okanogan and Napavine were in a chase for most of the meet, but Morika Morelan of the Dragons rolled up a win in the 3200 with a 11:35.03 for a four-plus second gap top the St. George’s distance points.

Colfax senior Scout Cai Friday set a new state meet record with a 12-3 in the pole vault. She topped her season best of 12-0. The previous meet record was 11-9, which was set by Chelsi Friese of Wallapa Valley in 2007.

Scout Cai also won the high jump as the only competitor to top 5-2 and came close to clearing the bar at 5-5 after she opted for that height.

Scout Cai and Grace Hamre of Napavine dueled in both sprint events. Hamre took both races with a 12.78/12.86 edge in the 100 and a 26.09/26.53 in the 200. Hamre also took the 400 at 58.65.

Sophomore Piper Cai tied for sixth in the high jump at 4-10 to place both of the Cai sisters on the awards stand at the same time. Piper also placed ninth in the pole vault behind her sister’s record win.

Junior Alexie Smith placed fifth in the vault at 8-6.

Colfax senior Olivia Mellor finished eighth in the long jump at 15-10.5 and 10th in the triple at 31-4.

The Bulldog girls bagged points in all three relay races with Mellor, Josie Riebold, Katelyn Scholz and Smith finishing fifth in the 4x100; Smith, Piper Cai, Sarah Kraut and Riebold seventh in the 4x200; and Mellor, Carmen Gfeller, Piper Cai and Kraut sixth in the 4x400.

Colfax boys placed 27th at 4.5 points with Caleb Brown placing eighth in the pole vault at 11-0 and Ben Ahmann placing seventh in the 300 hurdles.
