    Jake Hull, Whitman County Gazette|Feb 22, 2024

PALOUSE - In a highly-anticipated battle between Whitman County rivals, the Garfield-Palouse girls basketball team and the Colton Wildcats, the Vikings emerged victorious, eliminating the Wildcats from state playoff contention. The Vikings and Wildcats played on Friday, Feb. 16, in Dayton. In the game, the Wildcats would struggle to score against the height and length of the Vikings. Colton would fall 29-42 to the Vikings. Although the Wildcats have height throughout their lineup, particularly...

  • House amends, passes fire aid bill

    Whitman County Gazette|Feb 22, 2024

OLYMPIA — The state House of Representatives has stripped the flexibility of wildfire victims in rebuilding out of a bill introduced by Rep. Mike Volz, R-Spokane. Volz’s original House Bill 1899 would have allowed wildfire victim’s to rebuild under Jan. 1, 2023, construction codes, if they so chose. The amended version strips that flexibility and would only make assistance available to victims rebuilding using more energy efficient and environmental-friendly ways. Subject to the funding availability, the state Department of Commerce would...

  • Inmate horse-training bill passes House

    Whitman County Gazette|Feb 22, 2024

OLYMPIA — A bill requiring the state Department of Corrections to study the feasibility of creating a wild horse inmate training program passed the state House, 95-2, last Tuesday. House Bill 2210 would direct Corrections to study and develop a wild horse training, holding and farrier program at state corrections centers, like nearby Coyote Ridge in Connell. It’s the second time the horse-training program was approved by the House. “This is a bill that originally passed the Legislature in 2020,” sponsor Rep. Mary Dye, R-Pomeroy, said. “But th...

  • Aid to Gaza

    Feb 22, 2024

While driving down the road to I-90 from Cheney, I saw F-135 refueling planes circling around Fairchild Airforce Base. It occurred to me that there are many military airplanes waiting to be deployed. These airplanes could be used to avoid further starvation and death in Gaza by airlifting food, water and medicine in this war-torn region. And, to help Americans to honor our value for human life, we could send hospital ships like Mercy Corp, to the Mediterranean Sea to treat injured women and children, and of course men. Involving the military...

  • Biden's Accomplishments

    Feb 22, 2024

President Joe Biden’s accomplishments have been remarkable, especially considering the cult-like devotion to Donald Trump of most congressional Republicans, including Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Trump opposes everything Biden proposes, completely disregarding our country’s welfare, caring only about his election. A prime example is Trump’s recent edict that all Republicans scuttle the bipartisan, long-negotiated Senate deal that supported Ukraine and limited immigration. House Speaker Mike Johnson had already complied by withholding a full House...

  • Jesus Gets Us

    Feb 22, 2024

Like approximately 200 million other folks, I watched the Super Bowl ad “Jesus gets us”. Like most things on TV, it wasn’t showing the complete truth. “Jesus gets us” is true. But, He doesn’t wash our feet and leave us in our sin. The point of “the washing of feet” is the continual cleaning FROM sin—not the acceptance of it. Jesus doesn’t endorse, accommodate, coddle, nor tolerate sin. He loves us sinners enough to transform us out of our sin. He doesn’t wash our feet so we can continue to walk in it. And, He has paid the bloody price to break...

  • Cleansing sewage essential to fresh water supply

    Don C. Brunell, Business analyst|Feb 22, 2024

In Washington, this year we hope to again escape the historic droughts plaguing other parts of the world. The Columbia River water system flowed at normal levels in recent years which is good for our agriculture, hydropower generation, barging, local water supplies, and fish and wildlife. However, 20 years ago we faced the same severe drought that is afflicting the world’s major river drainages including the Colorado River. That water scarcity forced factories to close, farmland to remain f...

  • Forest bill offers a welcome change

    Roger Harnack, Whitman County Gazette|Feb 22, 2024

Funny how it took a move into the country before a Democrat would support efforts to clean up our forests. Last week, Senate Bill 6121 passed the Senate unanimously. The bill sponsored by Sen. Kevin Van De Wege — a Democrat who now lives at Lake Sutherland — encourages the removal of downed timber and other “fuel” that could feed a wildfire. He should be commended for being the first Democrat to step out of the party box and recognize the importance of removing downed timber, dead snags and othe...
