TEKOA — Lifelong Tekoa residents Larry and Virginia Heaton are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this weekend with a family dinner hosted by their children, John Heaton and Kellie Coffey, and grandchildren, Christopher and Paisha Coffey. Tekoa Athenaeum Athenaeum Club held its annual Christmas luncheon Dec. 1 with more than 30 members attending. The luncheon was prepared by the Yearbook Committee and the venue was the Methodist church. The guests were entertained with Christmas music by pianist Kristen Cox from Deary, Idaho, who will graduate later this year from the U of I. Her friend, Morgan Kline, joined her for the duet performance. She is a Master's student at the university. It was a very enjoyable time. Tekoa Saturday, April 24, Tekoa FFA and 4H competitors practiced for the Junior Livestock Show which will be May 4-7 in Spokane. Fifteen animals were shown by exhibitors on a very blustery day. The Spokane Junior Show will celebrate its 75th anniversary this spring. Tekoa Community Church hosted a fundraiser breakfast Sunday, April 25. Tekoa Tekoa High School graduates in the class of 1950 plan a 60th class reunion to be held during Slippery Gulch Days Saturday June 19. Organizer Tim Daily of Portland said grads will meet for a dinner and a program at the Airport Ramada Inn at Spokane that Friday night. The next morning they will “hitch up their buggies” and head for Tekoa for breakfast and the annual graduate ride down Crosby Street during the Slippery Gulch parade. Tekoa The Republican Caucus was held recently in Tekoa at the home of Bunny Bippes. Amendments to the Republican platform were discussed and sent on to the county chairman, Steve Naught of St. John. Tekoa Plans are underway for a new outdoor market in Tekoa, the “First Saturday Outdoor Market.” It will be on the corner of Crosby and Warren on the first Saturday of each month, starting in May and continuing through September at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Committee members are Sandy Dehan, Teresa Hoke-House, Teresa Raines, Wendy Sienknecht and Eileen Soldwedel. Tekoa Bunny Bippes returned from a holiday trip visiting with her daughters, Gerrie Kennedy and Joan Blumeyer. She visited with Gerrie in Seattle and then the two of them flew to Oceanside, Calif., for the Christmas holiday, Bunny reported “The weather was beautiful but it’s not the same enjoying Christmas with no snow,” she said. Tekoa Portia Pillig, owner of Tekoa’s Variety Store, for the fourth year has headed up Tekoa’s Giving Tree to children of her hometown. “I want to be sure that every child has something to open under the tree,” Portia stated. Every year she says many come to the store asking for help for their young ones. Gifts are given out to children 18 years and younger. Tekoa A cow moose and a young bull have been spotted at many locations in Tekoa. Dave and Laurie Shrope, living on the south side of town, have discovered moose noseprints on their front window, and were startled when they opened their drapes one morning to see the cow moose staring back at them. Dave said they bed down in their front yard or the old school yard lot behind their residence frequently. The cow simply grazes, but the bull is more destructive. Tekoa Tekoa Cub Scout Pack recently completed their annual gathering of food for families in need. Fourteen boxes were collected and distributed to local families. Tekoa For the 34th year, members of Tekoa’s churches will join together for a Thanksgiving service. The year’s service is set for Sunday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. Sacred Heart Parish is the host church and joining with them for the evening will be Tekoa Community Church and the Tekoa Mountain Chapel. A service of Scripture readings, music, a message by Hal Whitman of the Tekoa Community Church, and songs by the children is planned.
