  • Adele ferguson: Adele Ferguson puts ballot on the record

    Nov 1, 2012

OK, TIME’S UP. The ballot is at hand and we must choose who we think will do the best job of running the country and the state. Our president has had four years to do something concrete about the fact 26 million people are out of work with little to show for it. He reminds me of that Indiana Jones movie where Indiana and his father are captured by the crooks and the father learns his son has with him the book he had sent to him that tells how to find the Holy Grail and snaps, “I should have sent it to the Marx Brothers.” If we could have elect...

  • Take a look

    Nov 1, 2012

Endicott residents, take a good look at your town. Almost half of our town is an ordinance nightmare. Most of these places have multiple infractions. These offenses are demeaning and dangerous to your town and the other half of the residents who keep their homes, land, and vehicles, “by choice” looking great. No pride in town appearance. No pride in their homes and land. No respect for their neighbor’s property value. No respect for themselves. No compliance for town ordinances or codes. Weeds, rubbish-debris, junk vehicles and parts there...

  • Distraction

    Nov 1, 2012

The League of Women Voters of Pullman opposes 1- 1240, which would establish up to 40 Charter Schools because: Charter Schools are not accountable to voters or elected officials. An appointed state commission is created to authorize and oversee charter schools not the constitutionally mandated, publicly elected, Superintendent of Public Instruction. Private boards rather than publicly elected school boards govern charter schools. An existing public school could be converted to a charter school by a petition of a majority of teachers or of...

  • Looking forward

    Nov 1, 2012

Colfax I am enthusiastic about two local candidates whom I have known personally for many years, Art Swannack and Dean Kinzer. Both will make excellent County Commissioners. Art and Dean have been successful farmers and ranchers and have used sound business and fiscal judgment. Both are enthusiastic and skilled agricultural and civic leaders. They are good listeners and men of sound judgment. I am confident that both will serve as dedicated representatives of the people of Whitman County. I look forward to all they will achieve on behalf of...

  • Decisions

    Nov 1, 2012

Rosalia I write this letter to express my views as who should get the vote for County Commissioner for our district #1 here in northern Whitman County. Before you vote you should consider who will serve you best as our Commissioner. We have someone who is in the running that will represent us as we should be, and that is Bill Tensfeld. Bill has been a leader for years in his job with District 7 Fire District and many other positions, making great decisions that made our district one of the best in the state. His opponent may be popular, but...

  • Two county roads on chopping block

    Nov 1, 2012

Whitman County is considering taking two more roads and surplus property off its roster. Public Works Director Mark Storey Monday told county commissioners he wants to give up the Seltice Road near Tekoa, the Wagner Road by Ewan and chunks of right-of-way along Almota Road. Doing so, he said, gets the properties back on the tax roll and minimizes the county’s expenses for maintenance like plowing and grading. Ownership of an abandoned road reverts to adjacent property owners. Wagner Road is a 1.94-mile dirt road that connects Davis and Bowen r...

  • Health insurance costs rile county employees

    Joe Smillie|Nov 1, 2012

Employees of Whitman County government pleaded for increased benefits Monday morning as commissioners discussed health insurance plans for the coming year. “There’s been a paucity of investment in employees,” Deputy Prosecutor Byron Bedirian told commissioners. “We’re invested in this county. We like working here; we like working with each other; we like working with you, and we like working with the public.” The current package of salary and benefits given county employees, said Kris Thompson, clerk for district court, means many have to wor...

  • Palouse council weighs cuts to police

    Garth Meyer|Nov 1, 2012

In order to create a budget where revenues match expenses, Councilman Cecil Floyd brought up options regarding law enforcement, including reduction of officers and/or contracting with the sheriff’s office. The proposals sparked discussion from the council while no motion was made. The meeting began with Mayor Michael Echanove saying that the night’s objective was to review current exp...

    Joe Smillie|Nov 1, 2012

Whitman County commissioners Monday put off an official decision on the fate of the county-owned CETC building on Main Street Colfax until they can establish a minimum bid amount for the building. The CETC, damaged by a snow load in the winter of 2009, needs about $125,000 worth of work to get up to code, according to Bob Reynolds, county facilities manager. “The design of the building really doesn’t come up to today’s standards and codes,” said Reynolds. Commissioners Monday morning received no input from the public during a hearing on the...

  • Spokane County move could close Martin Hall

    Joe Smillie|Nov 1, 2012

Spokane County’s decision to deny the budget put forth for operations at Martin Hall has put the fate of the multi-county juvenile detention center back in doubt. Joe Smillie|Nov 1, 2012

Closure of Colfax Airport Road to through traffic was extended through May 31 by Whitman County Monday. The county closed the road two weeks ago for installation of new culverts for Rebel Flat Creek which flows beneath the road near the west end of the airport. The road was originally slated to re-open to through traffic this weekend, but a slate of incidents prompted Public Works Director Mark Storey to call for the closure through spring. Too subtle? Despite prominent signs marking the closure of Colfax Airport Road, many drivers have tried...
