    V-Day WSU, part of the movement to end gender violence, will host public auditions for the 2013 benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues” from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and Friday, Nov. 1 and 2, in Todd 302. Performance dates will be Feb. 21-23. The award-winning play is based on interviews with more than 200 diverse women about their experiences with sexuality, violence and life in general.   • Repairs set for WH&R building

    A city building permit to repair damage to a corner of Whitman Health & Rehab at 1150 W. Fairview was issued Oct. 25. Compass Construction of Spokane applied for the permit to make the repairs which were estimated to cost $5,300. The exterior corner of the building was damaged Aug. 29 when a pickup truck rolled down the incline of the Whitman Hospital parking lot which is located above the Whitman Health & Rehab building.   • Veterans' programs planned

    Veterans’ Day programs are planned at both Colfax schools with the public invited to attend. The program at Jennings Elementary will be Nov. 9 beginning at 9 a.m. in the old gym. The program will include the honor guard from Fairchild Air Force Base, local Boy Scouts and patriotic music with kindergarten students singing “She’s a Grand Old Flag.” Sixth graders will read patriotic messages.   • US flags to return this week

    First posting of the US flags under the town’s new flags policy was last weekend. Steve Larkin, city parks supervisor who volunteers for the flags detail, said the US flags were slated to be posted in official observance of Navy Day, Oct. 27. City council members at their Oct. 15 meeting approved a policy which bans posting of any flags except the US flag on Main Street light standards during national observance days.     Diabetes awareness month November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is a serious disease and is a serious concern for residents of our hospital district. Our rate is 8.2 percent compared to the statewide average of 7.1 percent. Our rate of obesity is also higher than average (30.5 percent vs 25.6 percent ) and we do not get sufficient exercise. Lack of physical activity contributes to obesity, diabetes and their complications.     8 years ago November 4, 1887 The old blacksmith shop on the corner of Main and Canyon has been torn down. The shop was built about 14 years ago and was the last of the original buildings of Colfax. T.B. Weller is building a new 24x60 feet building on the site of the old one.     Lacrosse Fifth graders Matea Enzweiler, Trey Fleming, Lauren Stubbs, Gunnar Aune and Blake Jones learned how to play Cribbage during Friday math periods in the fall quarter. Bonnie Bigsby, Charles Miller and April Guske were instructors. Fifth and sixth graders attended the fifth grade day hosted by the Spokane symphony at the Fox Theatre in Spokane. Her oldest son, Brandon, graduated from Colfax High School last spring and is now a freshman at Boise State University.     Lindsay Webber, one of eight FFA students from Colfax High who attended the national convention in Indianapolis, sings on the main stage at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in front of 15,000 people at the second session last Thursday. Lindsay sang “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway musical Wicked. In addition to singing on the main stage, Lindsay also sang several other songs on various stages and at a special awards dinner.     The 11th annual Haunted Palouse completed its two-weekend run Saturday and organizers report attendance at 3,073.   • Pullman driver rescued from Palouse River

    Chang Liu, 23, Pullman, was rescued from the N. Fork of the Palouse River early Monday morning after she drove a car through the fence next to the Busch Distributors self service plaza on the Walla Walla Highway. The car, a 2007 Mazda, landed on its roof in the river channel. Liu was able to climb out of the overturned Mazda and called out for help.
