    Colfax volleyball players will head to Gonzaga Prep today for the second half of this year’s Colfax vs. the Greater Spokane League bookings. The first chapter went down Saturday when the Bulldogs traveled to Mt. Spokane and won in four games. Coach Sue Doering said the Colfax serving was a big factor in topping the Wildcats who compete in the AAA Division. Line score was 25-15 21-25, 25-21 and 25-15 in the closer.     St. John Endicott cross country team opened their season at the big Hayden Canyon meet north of Coeur d’Alene Saturday. The Eagles have six boys and two girls on the team. Three Oakesdale runners are competing with the Eagles. At the Hayden course, which follows trails through the trees, the SJE team placed last among ten teams in the small school division.     The city of Tekoa may adjust its program which helps those in need pay water, sewer and garbage bills. Begun in 2011, Tekoa Project Share offers payment of city bills to those with a dire financial need – as opposed to shutting off services. The fund, for which each residence is eligible to use on one monthly bill per year, is replenished by citizens sending in extra on their accounts.     Customers filled the small cafe to the brim when the newly established Route 26 Cafe in LaCrosse opened Sept. 10. Barb Curtiss, proprietor, said only two seats were empty during lunch time on opening day. Curtiss said people seemed happy to have the cafe open again. Owned by LaCrosse Community Pride, the cafe closed in late May after Joe and Dionne Evans operated it as the Grillbilly Cafe for a year. Curtiss signed a lease with the Pride group in July.     A total of 40 juniors and seniors from Garfield-Palouse High School attended a presentation by former United States Ambassadors James and Lauren Moriarty at the University of Idaho Sept. 10. It was the fifth year that the Gar-Pal students have been guests of Dr. Bill Smith, director of the U of I Martin Institute of International Studies. The Moriaritys discussed their roles in developing U.S. foreign policy in their more than 30 years of diplomatic service.     A piece of Whitman County history was sold Tuesday afternoon. The Manning-Rye Bridge was part of farm property that was sold at auction in the Community Building at the Palouse Empire fairground. C.D. “Butch” Booker of Kincaid Real Estate in Colfax auctioned the property which has about 194 acres that included pastureland and timber, CRP and farmland, and also included a house.   • Stone houses in LaCrosse could see a new chapter

    With the help of LaCrosse Community Pride and some Washington State University students, the old stone houses in LaCrosse could see new life. At a Sept. 9 LaCrosse Community Pride meeting, member Peggy Bryan reported the H.D. Owings family of Lapwai, Idaho, recently donated the buildings to the organization. Owned by the Palouse Lions Club since the 1970s, the truck was restored to working order in the weeks leading up to the town’s annual street festival.     Whitman Hospital and Medical Center has applied for a $500,000 USDA grant to upgrade its MRI services at the hospital. Interim Hospital Director Gary Peck said they expect to get word about the grant application in about six weeks. Almost half of the grant proceeds would be used for 3D imaging equipment for breast evaluation, Peck said.   • Collision on Highway 195 takes life of 2012 CHS grad

    The car-truck collision Friday morning on Highway 195 six miles south of Colfax took the life of Samuel Thompson who was raised in Colfax. Thompson, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.     The Walla Walla District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began reopening the Illia Dunes beach and adjacent shallow waters on Monday after crews cleaned up the area that morning. The dunes had been closed to the public since Sept. 7 because of environmental damage and potential public health and safety concerns after an unexpected crowd of about 1,800 people on Sept. 6 left significant amounts of trash and human waste.
