James (Jim) Talmadge Harston, 62, former Thornton-area resident who moved to Spokane five years ago, died in a rafting incident Monday May 8, 2017, on the Moyie River near Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Whitman County commissioners and Latah County commissioners will meet for another joint session May 30. The two entities meet from time-to-time to discuss what is happening in each county. “It's just a touch bases meeting,” said Whitman County Commissioner Michael Largent. The City of Palouse has granted four permits for new houses in the past six weeks with another expected to be issued after a zoning variance is decided by the city's board of adjustment. The permits are for two houses in the Palouse Cove subdivision and two at the north end of the city. The pending permit is also at the north end. Four of the houses would be built on lots that were previously part of larger lots. Garfield/Palouse School District Superintendent Calvin Johnson will be honored at the Washington Association of Agricultural Educators Banquet June 28 as administrator of the year. In Johnson's three years as Gar/Pal superintendent, the school has added a second agriculture teacher and expanded its program to robotics and computer-aided design. Johnson has also worked on the effort to fund and build a new greenhouse for which ground will be broken at the end of May. The Town of Garfield will again run its traditional streets levy for 2017 at the same total it passed at last year – $62,000. The town council approved the amount in its April 12 meeting, to go before voters in August. “We call it a street levy, but it helps pay for streetlights and snow removal,” said Mayor Ray McCown. “It just takes that much to complete our budget.” The town proposed a $10,000 levy, intended specifically for repairs on Spokane Street, which failed....
Inland Northwest Bank (INB) recently donated $1,000 to The Center at the Colfax Library, which means only $1,000 is needed to meet the goal for renovations and improvements. The bank’s donation was made in honor of Jon Kehne (center), retiring vice president, agricultural loan officer and former Whitman County Library trustee. Tekoa's neighborhood watch program is underway, beginning the first week of April. Enough volunteers have been secured to patrol the whole city, acting on an unofficial schedule. Organizers have divided the city into sections with one of eight leaders assigned to it. Watch participants have already made reports to the county sheriff, one of which was a domestic situation observed on the side of the highway. The Reading Bear and the kids at Vicki Hatley’s Daycare in Colfax again topped group donations in the penny drive. Friends of Whitman County Library collected $1,831 in coins during the 2017 penny drive in celebration of National Library Week. The Council on Aging hosted its second annual 'Volunteers Appreciation Dinner' Wednesday, May 3, at the Colfax pantry. Margie Anderson, Fiscal and Operations Manager at COA, and Ryan Avery, administrative assistant and Coast driver, cooked up an elaborate taco bar to feed the 54 people who attended. Pullman City Council Tuesday presented an Outstanding Citizen award to Kaycee Faber, who, on May 5, fought off an attacker after he followed her home and forced his way into her apartment. Faber fought back and was able to force the assailant out of her apartment. She immediately called 911 and described her attacker who was arrested and positively identified by Faber. Sand Road work to resume Work on the the Sand Road project is about to be resumed. The county planned to resume work Wednesday, but could wait until Monday because of the rain. Shut down for winter, the project near Pullman had been expected to resume in March. Public Works Director Mark Storey told county commissioners Feb. 20 that rock-crushing work was completed Feb. 17, and crews were coordinating to get equipment off the site while following newly-posted load limits on area roads. The eaglets along the N. Palouse river are growing very fast, as is necessary for all birds. For eagles, a 35-day incubation for eggs and 58-98 days for nestling can be used to get the eaglets out on their own. The success of this couple in rearing their young speaks volumes about the condition of the N. Palouse River which provides the fish that appears to be a large portion of their diet.
