James (Jim) Talmadge Harston, 62, former Thornton-area resident who moved to Spokane five years ago, died in a rafting incident Monday May 8, 2017, on the Moyie River near Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

His funeral was Tuesday, May 16, at the LDS Church Chapel on West Francis in Spokane.

A graveside service followed at the Greenwood Memorial Terrace, 211 N Government Way, Spokane.

Born June 18, 1954, in Moscow to Clarence Briggs and Ruth Harston, he was raised in Albion and spent a couple of years in Pakistan during his youth. He served a two-year mission in French Polynesia for his church.

He met his wife, Kim Nelson, in Tacoma, and they were married July 8, 1983, in the Seattle LDS temple. He received a degree in communications from Brigham Young University and law degree from the University of Puget Sound. They raised their family in Tacoma and Thornton, where they resided from 1990 until 2011. Their children attended Rosalia schools.

Mr. Harston was an active and life-long Scout leader in the local scout district and served for a time as scoutmaster for the LDS Church troop in Colfax. The Harstons were members of the church here while the family was raised at Thornton

Surviving are his wife, Kimberly Lu Nelson, and children Maranna (Ryan) Hollist, Briggs (Rachel) Harston, Clarissa (Levi) Shaw, and Reed (Narriman) Harston. He also leaves eight grandchildren, his step-mother Lavon Harston and six siblings.

Robert Rudy, 90, longtime Colfax resident, died Sunday, May 14. As per his wishes, there will be no local services. A full obituary will be published at a later date. Bruning Funeral Home is caring for the family.
