In response After reading the letter to the editor that Rick Squibb wrote last week I must respond. When I was commissioner I spent most of my time on the Hawkins (stateline project). The only reason why that project hasn’t happened yet is of no fault of the commissioners. There were issues that slowed the project beyond the county’s control. Mayor Chaney of Moscow single handedly brought the water transfers to a halt in excess of a year. One case of littering along the N. Palouse River road has been resolved. The city investigated a complaint of several plastic bags of household litter which were left along the road at about three miles out. City police determined the origin of the litter from a letter envelope which was found in the litter. Chief Bill Hickman said the suspect was contacted, advised of possible charges and given the alternative of cleaning up the mess. The litter was gone as of 8 a.m. last Thursday morning.... Full story

Lawmakers gathered in Olympia for the 2010 legislative session can either set our state up for long-term prosperity or put off the tough budget decisions until 2011 when it will be even more difficult to solve our financial problems. ITEM–State officials are working on a plan to contract out the operation of a Hood Canal salmon hatchery, an effort that could lead to private operation of other hatcheries throughout the state. The plan is to contract out the operation of the McKernan hatchery on Weaver Creek, a tributary of the Skokomish River, which is otherwise scheduled to close June 30. McKernan produces chum salmon as well as steelhead. Commercial fishers don’t want to reduce chum production but don’t care about steelhead which cannot be taken commercially. COMME...

Head football coach Pete Carroll is leaving the University of Southern California. He is leaving the PAC 10. He is leaving college athletics. He is also leaving an NCAA investigation. Carroll has announced that he is going to Seattle to coach the Seahawks. His replacement has already been named. Lane Kiffen, coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, will replace Carroll. Two Colfax coaches, Corey Baerlocher and Sue Doering, and Colton’s Clark Vining are among five nominees for girls team coach of the year at the Spokane Regional Sports Award Banquet. A victim advocacy organization on the Palouse is getting the word out on stalking throughout January, Stalking Awareness month. Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse is hitting up small towns around Whitman and Latah County with bookmarks and posters advertising the organization’s contact information. Their hope is to reach people struggling with stalking or domestic violence. “It’s not romantic. It’s not funny. It’s stalking, and it’s a crime,” said outreach advocate Margaret Mount. The Army Corps of Engineers will close down locks at the four Snake River dams and at McNary Dam on the Columbia River March 6 to March 21. Annual maintenance, inspection and repair work will be undertaken at the locks during the three week period. A new humidity control system is being installed this week in the three operating rooms in the surgery wing at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center.
