Tigercats fight off Eagles in Friday night thriller

Dylan Schmick of the Eagles stretches to put one up between Sam Harder (44) and Chris Wargo of the Tigercats in the second half of the league scramble Friday at Washtucna.

Junior Chris Wargo picked up the scoring mantle for LaCrosse/Washtucna Friday night and led the Tigercats to a 50-48 squeaker win over St. John/Endicott in the Washtucna gym.

With top gun Jeff Zimmer sidelined with foul trouble for much of the game, Wargo and Jake Aune combined to put 29 points on the board.

Wargo, who finished with 17, hit two buckets in the final minutes to keep the Tigercats afloat after SJE’s pressure game took a toll.

Evan Raynor then bounced the Eagles back on top by a point on the other end, and Wargo answered again for a 49-48 lead.

Cole McCanna had 13 points to top the Eagles, and Evan Raynor and Dylan Schmick each chipped in 11.

The Tigercats followed their big win Friday night with a 44-25 loss against Tri-Cities Prep at Pasco Saturday.

The Jaguar defense bottled up LW early, holding the ‘cats to just nine points in the first half. Antonio Ledesma powered TCP with 10 points, 14 rebounds and eight steals.

Jeff Zimmer hit 17 of LW’s 25 points.

Saturday at St. John, the Eagles hung tough with the undefeated Spartans through the first quarter but Rosalia stepped on the gas in the second frame to pull away for a 71-38 win.

Jim Maley’s 21 points were tops among the 12 Spartan scorers. Schmick had 10 to top the Eagles.

Tuesday at Colton, the Wildcats stuck with visiting Liberty Christian through the first half, but the powerhouse Patriots had too much powder in their muskets and ran away with the game in the second half.

Down just five at the break, the Wildcats lost their shot and were outscored 37-13 by the Pats in the second half.

Jake Seifken’s 20 points topped five Patriots in double figures. Josh Straughan hit 14 for Colton.

Maley roared out of the gate to power Rosalia to a 16-point first quarter lead as the Sparts put up a 61-35 win over Tekoa/Oakesdale Friday night. Maley notched 13 of his game-high 19 points before the halftime buzzer. Nathan Richards added 12.

Drake Hinkins notched 19 beans for the ‘hawks.

Richards racked up 17 points Tuesday night to lead the host Spartans to a 68-28 blowout over LaCrosse/Washtucna.

Rosalia had 10 Spartans tally points. The Sparts outscored the Tigercats 22-3 in the first quarter.

Jeff Zimmer had nine points for the ‘cats and Chris Wargo added eight.

An aggressive DeSales trap baffled the Garfield/Palouse offense in the first half Saturday, but the Vikes finally figured it out and posted a 71-55 win at Walla Walla.

Gar/Pal hit the accelerator in the final frame, breaking free of the Irish double teams to post 25 points.

Gavin Burt’s 19 points topped the game, and Blake Slocum added 16. Pat Richard led DeSales with 16.

The Vikings also hit the gas late Friday night, using a 19-8 fourth quarter to push past visiting Colton 58-49 at Garfield.

Burt scorched the Wildcat defense all night, wrapping up 22. Chase Druffel had 11 points to top the ‘cats.

Colton traveled to Touchet Saturday, and showed the effects of a long road trip, getting outscored by the Indians 22-8 in the opening frame. The Wildcats finally found their stroke late in the third quarter, but by then the game was out of reach.

Dustin Patchen’s 14 points were tops for Colton. Josh Straughan added 13.

Tekoa/Oakesdale Saturday night went ice cold late against Waitsburg-Prescott and fell 62-32.

The visiting Nighthawks hung with the Cards for the first half, but were done away in the third quarter when they could only manage to put three points on the board.

Earl Gaines paced the ‘hawks with 11 points.
