Mark Sackmann

Aug. 15, 1956 - Oct. 21, 2018

Mark Myron Sackmann, 62, of Spokane Valley, Wash., passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2018, after battling cancer for a year and a half. He was surrounded by family at the time.

Born in Spokane, Wash., on August 15, 1956, to Myron and Myrna Sackmann, he spent his early years in Spokane, Lynnwood, Monroe and Startup, Wash. He earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Seattle University in 1979.

He began working for Honeywell, Inc. as a work study student in 1977. His entire professional career was spent at Honeywell, spanning over 41 years of service, and receiving Honeywell's top technical award of the time, Super Tech.

Mark volunteered in Cub Scouts when his sons were young, serving as Cub Master for the Cub Scout Packs in Spokane Valley and Endicott, Wash. He also volunteered several years with the Boy Scout Troop in Colfax, Wash. Mark loved music all his life, including playing trumpet in high school and college, barbershop singing in college, and singing in several Catholic church choirs. Along with his wife, Cathy, he volunteered time with Worldwide Marriage Encounter. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for over twenty years.

Mark loved geocaching, camping and otherwise spending time in nature. He was a cat lover who always had a box on his home office desk for his beloved Lucy. And whenever Mark was deep in thought or telling a funny story, he could be seen relentlessly twirling his beard.

Mark was a very loving husband, devoted father, and caring brother and is already deeply missed. He will be remembered for his hard work, determination, courage in fighting his cancer, his penchant for flannel and Hawaiian shirts, his ready smile, his sense of humor, and his deep love for his family.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Catherine (Thorpe); sons, Joe (Mary Davis) and David (Emily); and sister, Marcy Walters. He is preceded in death by his parents, Myron and Myrna (Ackerman) Sackmann; and his brother-in-law, Doug Walters.

A vigil rosary will be held Friday, November 9 at 7:30 pm, at St. Patrick's Parish in Colfax, WA. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 10 at 11:00 am, also at St. Patrick's.

Mark requested that memorial donations be made to Swedish Foundation (http://www.swedishfoundation.org/) in his memory.

Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax, WA is caring for the family. On-line condolences may be found at http://www.bruningfuneralhome.com.
