Colton advances in district tournament

Savannah Bowe of Republic slides into the plate in the second inning to beat the throw by Colton catcher Emma Schultheis Saturday at Medical Lake. Colton pitcher Zoe Moser was covering the plate. Bowe had the lone score for the Tigers.

After an 11-1 dismissal of Republic Saturday, the Colton softball team advanced to the District 7/9 1B semifinals set for this week.

Playing again Saturday at Medical Lake High School, the Wildcats will meet Cusick at 2 p.m. In the other semifinal, Almira-Coulee-Hartline will play Liberty Christian.

Now Colton coach Brad Nilson prepares his players for a team he knows little about.

"I could call Pomeroy but I’m probably not going to," he said, of Cusick’s opponent last week. "I never have before. Why should I start now? We just play our game, not their game."

At Medical Lake Saturday, if Colton beats Cusick, they get an automatic berth to state as one of the top two from districts. If they lose, Colton drops into the loser’s bracket with Pomeroy, Curlew and the loser of A.C.H. and Liberty Christian.

A total of four teams from District 7/9 will advance to state in Yakima.

"This time of year you just stay nervous until we’re done playing," Nilson said.

With a steady production of runs, Colton beat Republic with an even hand.

Savannah Chadwick went 2 for 3 to lead at the plate while MaryAnn Jacobs and Rachel Meyer went 2 for 4.

On the mound Zoe Moser pitched the first three innings to allow one hit with four strikeouts and no walks. Winnie Schultheis took over for the fifth and sixth innings, also allowing one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.

Republic later lost to end their season. Touchet was also eliminated in the District 7/9 tournament’s first weekend.
