Ralph Lester Shindler

Graveside services for Bernice L. Glorfield, 85, life-long St. John area resident, will be Thursday, July 31, at 11 a.m. in the St. John Cemetery. Mrs. Glorfield died Monday, July 28, 2014, at her home northwest of St. John.

Born to Eddie and Emma (Jenkins) Jones on the family ranch at Lancaster April 17, 1929, she attended grade school at Lancaster and went to St. John High School. She met Jack Robert Glorfield through a friend, and they were married Feb. 16, 1946, in St. John. They made their home on the Glorfield ranch northwest of St. John and farmed together throughout their lives.

Bernice was a busy homemaker and mother. She kept busy cooking for harvest crews, helping with haying and raising a large vegetable garden. She was well known for her bread-n-butter pickles and her delicious cinnamon rolls. Bernice also liked to go fishing.

Surviving are her son, Bob (Sandi) Glorfield of St. John; two daughters, Syrelda Moberly of Spokane and Jolene Boyle of Colfax; three sisters, Colleen Hutton of Spokane, Juanita Brophy of Pullman, Doris Potts of Spokane; two brothers, Dale Jones of Spokane, and Joe Jones of Indiana; 11 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in 2005, and a son, Billy.

The family suggests memorial gifts go to the St. John Fire Dept. or to Gentiva Hospice of Pullman.

A memorial service for Roy G. Hanson, 85, retired Garfield mechanic, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Garfield Christian Fellowship with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. Mr. Hanson died July 26, 2014, at LaDow Court Assisted Living in Garfield where he has resided since January.

Born Nov. 9, 1928, to Carl and Grace (Rae) Hanson in the family home near Potlatch, he started school at Fairview near the Cocking farm south of Farmington, and shortly after that the family relocated to a farm near LaDow Butte between Garfield and Palouse and he attended Garfield schools. He graduated from Garfield High School with the class 1947.

He attended Whitworth College in Spokane for one year on a football scholarship and then worked for several farmers in the Garfield area, including Herb Hemmingway, Sally Schroetlin and Warren Love. In 1950 he was drafted into the Army and served for nearly two years in Austria. While in the Army he received training as an automobile mechanic. Following discharge, he returned to the Garfield area and worked for Bagott Motors in Palouse. In 1962 he purchased Central Garage in Garfield from Ralph Akin and Wix Walters. He operated the auto repair shop for 33 years before retiring in 1995.

Roy and Betty Perkins were married in April 1958, and they made their home in Garfield where they raised their three children. Betty died in April 1980.

Survived are three children Tammy (Tim) Howard of Garfield, Teri (Butch) Kneale of LaCrosse, and Tim (Jill) Hanson of Spokane Valley; a sister Marilyn Bye of Ephrata, and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death a grandson, Rob Howard.

A memorial service for Zella Emmarine Bell Miller, 96, former long-time area farm woman who made her retirement home in Colfax, was Saturday at the Good Samaritan Society Community Center in the Spokane Valley. Interment will be at the Dusty Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller died July 19, 2014, at the center where she had made her home since 2007.

Born Feb. 22, 1918, in Portland, Ore., to Robert and Minnie Belle Magruder Bell, she was the fourth of nine children. Raised in the Riparia-Hay area she attended the Star school at Riparia through the eighth grade. Her mother died when she was 13 and she had to help raise her younger brothers and sisters.

She and Frank P. Miller were married June 2, 1935, at the Bell home on the Hunt ranch near Riparia. They lived on a farm at Hay and later purchased a ranch at Wilcox in the early 1940s. In 1946, because of health reasons, they moved to Georgia and then to Walla Walla. They then moved to Colfax and Mr. Miller continued to farm the Wilcox ranch.

He retired from farming in 1966, and they built a new home on the south hill in Colfax. They spent winters in California and enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed painting, sewing and quilting and made quilts for family members and friends. She was a member of the Hay FAN club, Dusty BB club, Wilcox Grange, Colfax Methodist Church, Athenaeum Club, Order of Eastern Star and the Colfax Golf Club.

Mr. Miller died in 1987 after 52 years of marriage and she moved to the Spokane Valley where she volunteered at Deaconess Medical Center and Valley Hospital. She was crowned queen of the Celebrate Life Pageant in 2012.

Surviving are three daughters, Mavis Lust Jensen, Post Falls; Karen (Bill) Curtis, Ritzville; and Myrna (Gary) Kneale, Colfax; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her spouse, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jay Lust in 2011 and Dirk Curtis in 1976, and one great-grandchild, Courtni Osmun in 2008.

The family suggests memorial contributions go to the Good Samaritan Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
