James L. Arthurs

A memorial service for James L. Arthurs, 94, Palouse, will be today, Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse with the Rev. Corey Laughary officiating. The U.S. Army honors team and Potlatch Post V.F.W. will participate. Urn burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse. Mr. Arthurs died March 12, 2014.

Born July 21, 1919, at Chester, Mont., to Lonzo J. and Mary (Wirl) Arthurs, he attended schools at Whitefish, Mont., and finished at Kalispell, Mont.

He served in the Army during WWII in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. He was discharged as a private first class Sept. 30, 1945. He enlisted in the United States Navy on May 23, 1947, and was discharged on May 22, 1952.

He married Mary Franklin at Moscow in 1949 and they were later divorced.

Mr. Arthurs worked construction all his life. He started out in Butte, Mont., and later moved to Pullman in 1953. He worked on many buildings on the WSU campus including the Regents Hall, French Administration Building and the Stephenson Complex. He retired in 1971 and later moved to Palouse to live with his daughter, Helen Hodson.

He was a member of the Laborers Local 238, and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include one son, William (Bill) Arthurs, Chattaroy; two daughters, Helen (Jerry) Hodson, Palouse, and Betty (Terry) Blankenship, Albion; 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, John Chapman.

Memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, 99210-2472.

Leslie C. Moss

A memorial service for Leslie C. Moss, 68, a resident of Palouse, was Saturday, March 15, at the Palouse Federated Church with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. Mrs. Moss died last Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Born May 4, 1945, at Los Angeles to John R. and Barbara Davis Clark, she attended schools in the San Gabriel Valley and graduated from the Claremont High School in 1963. She later attended the Pasadena Community College where she received her associates degree.

She married Jerry Moss Sept. 23, 1990, at Sun Valley, Idaho, and the couple made their home at Post Falls. They moved to Palouse in 1994. She was employed by the City of Moscow as a human resources director in l994 and retired May 1, 2013. Moss owns and operates Palouse Hills Accounting in Colfax.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Jerry, Palouse; one daughter, Stacey Wells, Spokane; one step-daughter, Mareena Moss, Seattle; one brother, Craig (Terri) Clark, Hailey, Idaho; one sister, Cheryl (Roger) Dickinson, Post Falls, and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Colfax Golf Course Foundation, N. 114 Main, Colfax, or to the Washington State University Veterinary Hospital, 205 Ott Rd, Pullman, WA 99163.

Betty J. Stanczak,

Betty J. Stanczak, 86, died March 16, 2014. Funeral service will be Monday, March 24, at Heritage Chapel. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 24, at Heritage Funeral Home in Spokane. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Oakesdale Cemetery.

Born Feb. 18, 1928, to Ward and Margaret Brown in Oakesdale, she graduated from Oakesdale High School and shortly after married John Stanczak. She worked at the Gung Ho Restaurant on Third Avenue in Spokane and later on North Division retiring after 30 years.

Betty enjoyed working in her flower beds and canning. She was a lover of horses and rode as often as she could.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Bud) Wright and a son, Tom Stanczak.

Visitation will be at Heritage Friday and Saturday 10-5.
