Nancy Hawbaker

Nancy C. Hawbaker, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at her family home near Palouse. A public service is not planned at this time.

Born Sept. 1, 1936, in Onawa, Iowa, to Gilbert and Grace Barker Hedges, she moved with her family to Omaha, Neb., where she attended South High School and graduated from Gretna High School where she played on volleyball and basketball teams.

She and John Hawbaker, then a student at Iowa State University, were married Sept. 10, 1955. They moved to Pullman where John received his doctorate degree from Washington State University. John’s career took the family to many locations, including San Francisco, Indiana, Connecticut and Missouri.

Nancy continued her education at The Way International College, receiving her degree in Biblical studies. Again the family found themselves traveling throughout the country working in various ministries, making central and southern California home for some time. The couple returned to Palouse where they have made their home for the last 23 years. During this time Nancy worked as a secretary at Beasley, Kincaid and Heritage Real Estate companies before retiring several years ago. Nancy enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs in Pullman. She also was a member of the Gourmet Dinner Club in Pullman and loved to cook, sew, read and do crafts.

She is survived by her husband, John, at the family home in Palouse; four sons Bill (Kathy) Hawbaker, Jeff (Debbie) Hawbaker, Bruce (Nicole) Hawbaker, Mike (Kathy) Hawbaker; two daughters, Janice Godinez, Sandra (John) Chisholm; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and four siblings, Ethel Mary, Della, Gene and Virgil Hedges. She was preceded in death by a son Alan Hawbaker.
