Lorna Ellis

Lorna H. Ellis, longtime Colfax resident, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at The Courtyard. She was 90. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colfax.

Lorna was born June 15, 1922, in Osceola, Wis., to John and Mabel (Boucher) Hinz. She grew up in Anamosa, Iowa, where her father ran a cheese factory in the federal penitentiary. She graduated from high school in Anamosa in 1940. She and John Ellis had been classmates all through school, and they married Dec. 19, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. Lorna stayed in Anamosa while John served his country. He was a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge he moved his young family to Utah.

They moved to Colfax in 1952 to be closer to relatives. Her husband got a job with Gene Foley in the concrete business. Lorna kept busy as a homemaker and mother and later she enjoyed working at The Top Notch or was known in shoe sales at Brookhart’s Clothing Store. She loved to golf, was active on women’s bowling leagues and was an excellent cook. She and John liked to take road trips and especially enjoyed times when they re-united with some of their old army buddies. They also liked to go boating on the Snake River, and they travelled on an Alaskan cruise.

Lorna is survived by her husband John at The Courtyard in Colfax; daughter Lynne Stewart, Colfax; sons Larry and wife Nit Ellis, Colfax, and Jack and his wife Carol Ellis of Mead; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, and her brother Irvin Hinz of Davenport, Iowa. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to Friends of Hospice, 1610 NE Eastgate Blvd, Suite 850, Pullman, WA 99163. On-line guest book is at http://www.bruningfuneralhome.com
