Elizabeth Howard

A graveside service for Elizabeth (Beth) Howard, 91, long time St. John resident, was Monday, Oct. 22, at noon in the St. John Cemetery followed by a luncheon reception at the St. John Methodist Church. Mrs. Howard died last Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, in Colfax.

Born Oct. 9, 1921, in Billings, Mont., to Perry and Mildred Parrish Sorenson, she spent some early years in Pendroy, Mont., where her father ran a lumber yard. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class at Choteau, Mont., in 1939.

An experienced bookkeeper after working in her father’s business, she kept books for several area businesses. She married Norman Rosengren June 12, 1940. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and Beth travelled everywhere he was stationed and usually ended up cooking for an Army unit. She and Norman had two boys.

Mr. Rosengren died in August 1945 while flying with a crew over the hump between India and China.

She returned to Pendroy with her boys. In 1949, she married Robert G. Howard and moved to St. John. He became a father to her boys and they also had two children. She kept busy as a homemaker and mother. Bob began teaching in Spokane in 1972. During the school year they lived in Spokane, and during the summers they lived at St. John. He retired in 1981.

They enjoyed traveling to craft fairs and flea markets where they often sold their crafts together. They made kinetic art and jeweled trees.

She was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs. She was also a member of the Pleasant Valley Wednesday Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was enthusiastic about sports and enjoyed watching and following the various teams. She also loved to read and sew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 2004.

Surviving are her four children, Norm Howard, St. John; Bill Howard, Orlando, Fla .; Phil (Joanne) Howard, Bothell; and Susan (Jay) Emery, Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren ,and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the St. John/Endicott Schools Foundation or St. John EMTs.

Carolyn Ann Shepherd

Carolyn Ann Shepherd, 102, former long-time resident of Tensed, Idaho, died early Friday Oct. 19, 2012, at Aspen Park Healthcare in Moscow. She moved in to assisted living at Latah Health services in Moscow in 1999 and later to Aspen Park.

A graveside inurnment will take place at a later date at the Lone Oak Cemetery, Stayton, Ore.

Born April 9, 1910, at Sublimity, Ore., to Bruno and Katherine (Fessler) Boedigheimer, she attended a Catholic School in Sublimity, Ore. She married Paul Shepherd March 24, 1934, at Klamath Falls, Ore., and the couple made their home there where Mr. Shepherd logged.

The couple moved to Tensed, Idaho, in 1945 where they operated the Sportsman Tavern for several years. Mr. Shepherd died in 1963.

Mrs. Shepherd worked at Codd’s Department Store in Tekoa for several years. She also sold Avon products in the area.

In the 1980’s she moved into the Leisure apartments in Tensed, and in 1997 to Moscow to live with her daughter.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Desmet, ID. She was active with the Tensed Senior Citizens. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, fishing, camping and all her grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Tanner and her husband Wilber, Moscow, Idaho and three granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse, WA is handling the arrangements.
