Jennie Fletcher

A memorial service for Jennie Fletcher, 82, was Friday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Tekoa Community Church in Tekoa with Pastor Hal Whitman officiating at the service. Mrs. Fletcher died Monday, Feb 27, in Spokane.

Born Jan. 21, 1930, at Ferndale, to Glen and Lenna Fern Hawthorne McKinley, she was raised at Dayton and graduated from Pasco High School in 1948. She married Gerald Fletcher Aug. 10, 1947, in Dayton, and they lived in the Dayton and Tekoa areas before settling in Tekoa in 1962. In Tekoa, Jennie was a homemaker and worked for several years as a bookkeeper at the Tekoa Care Center, Seed’s Inc., a clerk at Gossett’s Variety and at Tekoa Fertilizer & Chemical Co. She retired during the mid-1990’s.

Her hobbies included golfing, playing bridge and pinochle, fishing, camping, traveling in the family motorhome and raising her flower gardens. Jennie was known for her great sense of humor and enjoyed cooking. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Tekoa Community Church, Tekoa Bridge Club, and the Tekoa Golf and Country Club. Jennie was a former Campfire Girls Leader and former treasurer for the United Church of Tekoa.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Gerald, at their Tekoa home; two sons, Rod (Sammie), Spokane Valley, Steve Fletcher (Erin), Newman Lake; daughter Becky (Steve) Twiss, Bremerton; seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Tekoa Golf and Country Club, Box 809, Tekoa, 99033.

Elsie K. Griffin

A graveside service for Elsie K. Griffin, 95, will be today, Thursday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse, with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. Mrs. Griffin died early Sunday morning, March 4, 2012, at the Whitman Health and Rehab Center in Colfax.

Born June 11, 1916, at Denton, Mont., to Henry H. and Rose Nelson Griner, she moved to Washington and then to Idaho with her family. She attended school at Stites, Idaho, and later moved to Pullman with her mother and attended the Ewartsville country school through the eighth grade. She moved to Colfax and graduated with the Colfax High School class of 1934.

She married Harold Griffin Oct. 31, 1936, at Steptoe. They moved in 1947 to Palouse where they farmed, and she worked at the Wallace Grain and Pea Co. She then worked at Washington State University as a custodian from 1956 until she retired in 1974. Mr. Griffin died in 1993.

Elsie was a member of the Palouse Roundtable and the Latah County Roadrunners. She enjoyed fishing, camping, quilting, crocheting and reading. She also made many Christmas ornaments for her family.

Survivors include two sons, Gene (Jane) Griffin, Viola, and Jerry (Idella) Griffin, Palouse; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Palouse Roundtable Scholarship Fund, in care of Karen Huber, 465 W. Church St., Palouse, 99161.

Florilla Sorensen

A memorial service for Florilla Sorensen, 88, former long-time Endicott resident, will be Saturday morning at the Endicott Congregational Church with Pastor Dean Ellis officiating. Private family graveside services were in the Endicott Cemetery. Mrs. Sorenson died last Wednesday morning, Feb. 29, 2012, at the Whitman Health & Rehab Center in Colfax.

Born March 1, 1923, in Sigurd, Utah, to Ralph and Wave Snow Stevens, she grew up in Michigan and in the Bay area of California. She married George E. Sorensen in Reno, Nev., June 29, 1940. They made their home in El Cerrito, Calif., where Florilla kept busy as a homemaker and her husband worked as a carpenter. They moved to Redding, Calif., in 1948 and then to Canada where they lived for 12 years. They moved to Endicott in the late 1970s, and Florilla worked as a cook at sororities on the WSU campus. She also cooked for the senior citizens center and at Hill-Ray Plaza in Colfax.

She was a member of the Endicott Congregational Church and an active participant in Bible study groups. She was an avid gardener and member of the garden club. She moved to the Whitman Health & Rehab Center in Colfax in 2009.

Mr Sorenson died in 1986.

Surviving are two children; Lonny Sorensen, Palouse, and Linda Hall, Steptoe; two sisters, Virginia Sorensen, Everett, and Gwen Cox, Windsor, Calif .; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials go to the Whitman County Humane Society.
