Obituaries 11/10/11

A memorial service for Elbert (JR) Young, 73, will be at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Palouse Federated Church with the Rev. Corey Laughary officiating. Potlatch VFW and a US Army honor guard will participate.

Mr. Young died Nov. 2, 2011, at his home in Palouse. He was the owner of the Family Café in Palouse. During his life he was a fire fighter, carpenter, salesman and a steel worker.

He was born Oct. 26, 1938, in Bellow Falls, Vt., to Elbert and Arline Inez Welch Young.

Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Miller-Young at their Palouse home; three daughters, Roberta (Warren) Hunter, Martha (Rick) Buswell, Jennifer (Mark) Burns; four step-children, Rhonda (Mark) Johnson, Carl (Kathy) Miller, Steven (Sherri) Miller, Paula Parkins (Dennis Fealy), all Palouse; 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Palouse Federated Church.

A memorial service for Fydella E. Hutton, 80, will be Friday, Nov. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane. Mrs. Hutton died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at her home in Tekoa.

Born Feb. 23, 1931, at Everett to Ralph and Geraldine (Holcomb) Sharp, she graduated from Everett High School in 1949 and attended Pacific University where she received her teaching degree. She later attended graduate classes at Eastern Washington University and Central Washington University and later earned a masters degree in education.

She married Paul Hutton in Forest Grove, Ore., in 1952. The couple made their home in Duvall, Wash., for a short time, then moved to Republic where she taught for the next 13 years. The couple moved to Reardan in 1971, and she taught high school there until retiring as the district librarian in 1992. Following her retirement, she moved to Spokane and then to Tekoa in 2006 to be near her son.

She was a member of the Tekoa-Oakesdale Booster Club, the Tekoa-Oakesdale Livestock Boosters, the Brotherhood of Friends in Spokane and the Pacific University Alumni Association.

Survivors include one son Dan (Kathy) Hutton, Tekoa, daughters Janet Ellenson, Harrison, Idaho; Susan (Gary) Hustad Nine Mile Falls; Jerree (John) Hart, Spokane; one sister, Leann Torgerson -Harrison, Mill Creek; 12 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Bill Hutton and her daughter Donna Masny.

Fydella enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports, baking and making cookies and Christmas candy for her family and friends.

Larry Garrett

Larry Don Garrett, 71, LaCrosse, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at the Whitman Hospital in Colfax after a brief illness. A memorial service will be conducted next spring.

Born Jan. 12, 1940, in Kellogg, Idaho, to Marvin and Elaine Jeffries Garrett, he moved to St. Maries, Idaho, when he was young and then later to Spokane where he attended Rogers High School.

He drove a logging truck on the Colville Indian Reservation for several years following high school. At the age of 27, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany as an ordinance specialist. He was honorably discharged and returned to the Northwest. He met Marlene Ysen through mutual friends and the couple married in 1973.

They moved to Renton where Larry worked as a machinist for the Ingersoll-Rand Company. They moved to LaCrosse about 27 years ago and Larry worked as a machinist for BEK and then worked as a truck driver for many years, most recently for Empire Disposal. He retired four years ago.

A member of the LaCrosse Gun Club, he enjoyed hunting and camping with the family on the Colville Reservation near Lake Roosevelt.

Mrs. Garrett died in 2006.

Surviving are children Ben Oles of Coulee Dam, Tina Garrett of Oak Harbor and Annette Avery of Tucson, Ariz; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Cokie Garrett of Hayden Lake, and a brother, Jack Garrett of Hay.

Duane McNeil

A graveside service for Duane T. (Buck) McNeil, 75, native of Oakesdale and member of the 1955 class at Oakesdale High School, will be at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Thornton Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the Orchards Christian Church, 731 Warner Ave., Lewiston. Mr. McNeil died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011.

Born Aug. 15, 1936, in Oakesdale to Wilbur and Helene McNeil, he attended elementary school at Thornton and then attended Oakesdale High School where he was a member of the basketball team.

He married Mary Elaine Koch of Rosalia in 1957. Over the next 43 years he was employed with Pacific Northwest Bell and they resided in Spokane, Grand Coulee, Ritzville, Walla Walla, Pomeroy and Dayton where they resided for 10 years before he retired in 1999. He received a 23-year safety award in a commendation for being accident free for his entire career.

After he retired, they lived at Milton-Freewater, College Place and Columbia Falls, Mont., and then Lewiston.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine; three sons, Bruce (Cheryl), Kodiak, Alaska; Brian (Leslie), Great Falls, Mont., and Matt (Lori) Bend, Ore; one sister, Patty Turney, Spokane; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials go to the Orchards Christian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Smathers rite Friday

Glenda Fleming Smathers died Oct. 18, 2011, in Spokane. Born and raised in LaCrosse, she lived most of her life in Colville. A graveside service will be Nov. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. at LaCrosse Cemetery.

Surviving are one daughter, Tanya Shrope, Reardan, and one sister, Carol Hubbard, Hawaii.
