Donald Edwin Lorentzen

A memorial service for Donald E. Lorentzen, 83, will be Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse, with the Rev. Forrest Miller officiating and Potlatch VFW members and a U S. Army Honor Guard providing military honors. Mr. Lorentzen died Dec. 15, 2009, at Moscow.

Born Sept. 1, 1926, at Wilson Creek, to Edward and Louise Wilner Lorentzen, he grew up on a farm in the Addy area and attended Colville schools. He graduated from Colville High School with the class of 1944, joined the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He married Verna M. Pearson and the couple were later divorced.

After the war he worked various jobs in Chewelah and Spokane and became a driver for the Curlew Creamy at Chewelah for three years. Don was later employed on the pot lines at Kaiser Aluminum for about 10 years.

He married Ethel Lyons at Spokane and they lived at Moscow, and he worked various jobs in the Moscow area.

Don enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Ethel Lorentzen, Colfax; one daughter, Christina Osborn, one son, Terry Lorentzen both of Spokane; one brother, Loren Lorentzen, Clarkston; one sister, Katherine Nett, Spokane, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Rick Lorentzen.

William E. Syron

Funeral services for William E. Syron, 85, a former resident of Potlatch, will be today, Thursday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, with the Rev. Larry Vieth officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by a U.S. Army honor guard and Potlatch VFW will follow.

Mr. Syron died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow.

Born Nov. 2, 1924, at Garfield, to Everett and Elsie McNeil Syron, he attended schools at Garfield, Moscow, Chelan and finished his schooling at Potlatch.

He joined the U.S. Army Dec. 23, 1942, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was discharged Feb. 2, 1946, as a pharmacist’s mate third class.

He married Virginia Boyer Nov. 21, 1945, in Potlatch. They made their home at Potlatch until 1948 when they moved to the Rock Creek area south of Potlatch where they raised cattle and sheep. Mr. Syron was also employed at Potlatch Forests, Inc. as a lumber grader until he retired in 1987.

The couple moved to the Good Samaritan Village in 2006. Mrs. Syron died in 2006.

He was a member and past master of the Rock Creek Grange and served on the Potlatch school board. He also enjoyed woodworking and collecting old movies and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Les Syron, Potlatch; Wayne Syron, Lake Arthur, La .; one half brother, Don Bunch, Missoula; one sister, Vi Byrne, Colfax; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Henry E. Savage

Henry Savage, 91, retired Colfax attorney, died Feb. 21, 2010, in Tucson, from a heart condition. In accordance with his request, a funeral service will not be conducted.

He was born to Josephine and Frank Savage Sept. 18,1918, and raised in Spokane. He graduated from Gonzaga Law School in 1942 and served six years as a special agent with the FBI before accepting a partnership in a law firm in Colfax. He practiced law in Colfax until retiring in July of 1976.

During the 28 years he practiced in Colfax, Mr. Savage was active in civic affairs. He served four years as president of the Palouse Empire Fair and held local, state and national offices in the Elks Lodge. He was married to Bertha Cowen from 1940 until 1965. They had three daughters. He then married Cresenda Fields and lived with her until her death in 2008.

After his retirement, they resided at Cottonwood Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene and spent winters in Arizona. They later resided year-around in Tucson and spent retirement years traveling, golfing, gardening and visiting family members. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter, Margaret.

Surviving are his daughters, Mary Kralik, Sumner, and Robin (Dan) Smith from Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His first wife, Bertha, resides in Puyallup.
