    Four-year Colton High School quarterback Josh Straughan was named Most Valuable Player in a season-opening football game called the Dayton Classic, which pitted his Stillman College team against Central State University at Dayton, Ohio. Stillman College is an NCAA Divison II school in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The true freshman entered the game in the fourth quarter Sunday and led Stillman to three touchdowns and a 28-27 win.     Action in the new volleyball season Tuesday featured a rematch of the state title showdown at Yakima last year with Tekoa/Oakesdale and Colton colliding on the Wildcats’ court. The Nighthawks, who took the state title last year, came out of an 0-2 hole to take the season opener. They finished with a 15-9 edge in the fifth game decider.     Colfax volleyball team defeated Freeman in four games Tuesday in a match on the Scotties’ court to start the regular season. Both teams seemed to relish the first round match. “It was a good match.     A former Colfax ambulance will find new use in Palouse after the Palouse city council approved the purchase Aug. 28. Palouse Assistant Fire Chief Marv Pillars told the council the 2007 Ford 450 diesel powered ambulance was offered to Palouse EMS for $11,000, the trade-in value.     The Ilia Dunes on the lower Snake River was re-opened Sunday by the United States Army’s Corps of Engineers. A week-long clean-up after a wild party Aug. 25-26 netted more than 3,000 pounds of trash from the shore, the water and the three miles of ditch along the road between the dunes and Lower Granite Dam. The litter was hauled to the Asotin County landfill.
