  • Letters - Sept. 2, 2010

    Sep 2, 2010

Frivilous I myself and on behalf of my fellow Whitman County citizens who agree with me would like to collectively kick Roger Whitten’s ass for his filing of the frivolous recall petition that we the taxpayers of this county get to pay for. At least it was put to an end, saving us untold thousands. According to reports in this newspaper, “Total cost for lawyers to defend Whitman County Commissioners Pat O’Neill and Greg Partch against recall proceedings last month was $19,632.” I’m pretty sure there are many others areas in our county th...

  • W. Bruce Cameron - A Consultation With My Sister

    Sep 2, 2010

My younger sister looks to me to provide her with advice on how to do her job better — though she’s too shy to ask me questions, so I have to give her my opinion on an unsolicited basis. (She’s a doctor.) “You’re ‘book smart’ in medicine. I’m ‘street smart,’” I explain to her. “I’ve been practicing for 20 years!” she replies. “Well, keep at it, practice makes perfect. I think you’re coming along fine,” I say charitably. (Her response to this is, as they say in the medical profession, unprofessional.) She’s irritated with me because I was abl... Full story

  • Don Brunell - The forgotten tax

    Sep 2, 2010

With all the focus on eliminating the Bush tax cuts and spurring the economy, President Obama and Congressional Democrats are tripping over themselves touting their small business tax breaks this election season. What they’re not mentioning is an automatic tax increase that will hit family-owned businesses hard, starting on New Year’s Day. Unless Congress and President Obama act, the inheritance or “death tax” will automatically revert to its pre-2001 level: 55 percent of the value of one’s estate after a $1 million deduction. That tax alone... Full story

  • Adele Ferguson - Didier: don’t spend time by the phone

    Sep 2, 2010

IT WAS BAD enough when Clint Didier, who ran third in the U.S. Senate primary election where the top two vote getters are nominated, offered an endorsement to Republican Dino Rossi in exchange for policy pledges but he used the wrong pronoun. He said “we,” meaning the endorsement represented the 170,000 plus people who voted for him as a candidate endorsed by the Tea Party. Rossi told him to put his endorsement where the sun don’t shine and the woman who founded the Tea Party in Seattle said Didier wasn’t speaking for them even if they had end... Full story

  • Last Day at Toccata Blues

    Sep 2, 2010

Toccata Blues, which opened Jan. 4 after an extensive remodeling of the former commercial printing shop next to the Gazette, closed its doors Friday night after an eight-month run. The restaurant offered a specialty menu, fresh baked breads and rolls and a unique attraction for Colfax, performances by jazz musicians and others, generally on Friday nights. Terri Guenthner said they decided to close because other family members, who were part of the operation, had landed jobs in Pullman. The original intent was to start the restaurant and...
