    Lamont Sandi Swannack and Steven Engles along with their friend, Keith Pigott from Tacoma, recently traveled to Alaska to hunt coastal black bears. They flew into Ketchikan and then boarded a DeHavilland Beaver float plane for the trip to Prince of Wales Island. They rented a Suburban and drove to Craig, Alaska, where they stayed at the Kingfisher Lodge. They hunted with the Suburban for the first few days and then changed to a 16 foot skiff.     Colfax High School presented degrees to 56 members of the class of 2012 Saturday afternoon in the Colfax gym. Class members received over $759,411 in awards and scholarships which were presented last Tuesday and listed in Saturday’s commencement program. Of that total, $674,756 was for scholarship awards which continue over a four-year student period.     A 100th birthday observance for Bernadine Pyborn Whitmore has been scheduled during the Whitman County Historical Society Ice Cream Social at the Perkins House June 24. She will mark her 100th birthday June 27. She was born on that date in 1912 just outside of Wilcox and lived on a farm there. She and Irvine (Rusty) Whitmore were married Jan. 9, 1930, and they made their home south of Colfax on the Airport Road for 76 years. Mr. Whitmore died in January of 2009 at age 100.
