  • Tekoa hires courier to deliver samples

    Citing concerns since last fall that the postal service does not always deliver weekly samples within the required time of 24 hours, Tekoa City Council has opted to use a courier system. Tekoa entered into an agreement for delivery of its sewer and water samples to Anatek Laboratories in Spokane within 24 hours to Rich Chittenden of Tekoa. He will transport the weekly samples for $20 per trip. Chittenden will also retrieve sample bottles to bring back for new samples.... Full story

    An unattended donut frying session was listed as the cause of a Feb. 21 night fire at the Cougar Crest Apartments in Pullman which caused an estimated $200,000 in damage, according to Pullman Fire Marshal Chris Wehrung. He said the fire displaced seven residents from five apartment units. Pullman and Rural District 12 crews rolled to the apartment on NE Terre View Drive shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday.     Lucile Ensley Miller of Colfax, 90, granddaughter of Henry Ensley who homesteaded in the Onecho area in the late 1800s, holds great-great-grandson Charlie Buck, one month old. Lucile and her late husband, Marshall Miller, farmed in the Onecho area starting shortly after World War II. Next to Lucile is her son, Doug Miller of Leduc, Alberta, who farmed in Alberta with wife Loretta until retirement.     Washington State Department of Licensing recently unveiled a new driver license, identification card and temporary license format. The new formats began rolling out Monday, Feb. 13.     Whitman Hospital and Medical Center has received recogniton at the bronze level from the Washington State Department of Health for promoting breastfeeding to help get newborns off to a healthy start. Gov. Jay Inslee launched the "Healthiest Next Generation" initiative with helping children maintain a healthy weight, enjoy active lives and eat well.     Need help with home energy bills? Whitman County Library and Community Action Center are partnering to bring energy assistance to local towns around Whitman County. The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers a one-time payment to help qualified Whitman County residents make their energy bills more affordable. The funding pays a portion of energy costs, but the payment is not intended to cover the yearly cost of a residence.     Chunmoon Cho, 26, Pullman, was sentenced to 30 days in jail Feb. 17 in county superior court after he pleaded guilty to charges of four counts of possession of child pornography. He was also ordered to undergo 36 months of sexual offender treatment and was placed on 101 months of community custody. Cho was ordered to have no contact with minors and not to possess a computer with capacity to connect to the internet.
